Lost in Novell

my boss picked up a new client today
a med. size network running Novell 3.12
I need to put a scsi card in this machine and a tape drive to get sucessful backups
and I REALLY have NO idea how to do this
so my question is.
1. How do I load the drivers for the scsi card?
2.How do I load the drivers for the tape drive?
I am eternally grateful for any and all help
the only question he asked me is if I knew novell my reply was SOME and I do know a little bit I can get around some but I am still learning I have checked all the books I own on Novell but can't find what I am looking for Thanks again

It's been a long time since I used Netware 3.x, but I would suggest you start with the Netware 3.x documentation: http://support.novell.com/search/kb_index.html

Just a word of warning: you may not be able to find drivers since Netware 3.x isn't supported a lot anymore. Netware 4.x is used widely and Netware 5 has been out for a while now, too.

I think they feel that if you can't even
load a driver then you should not been
doing the job.( I kinda agree )
but I got the job now I have to come up with the answer

Well Our supplier told my boss he needed to get Backup Exec 8.5 but version 7.5 is the only version supported in novell 3.12
we have that but we also purchased the open file backup routine but that is not supported
under version7.5 just 8.5 ... the Scsi card is an adaptec 2940 with a seagate dat drive

We had the same problem with our old Netware 3 server, open files could not be backed up. The only thing we could do is ask people to shut down their pc's when they left for the night, that would make sure no files are open. I basically told everyone they could leave their computers on 24/7 if they wished, however any open data would NOT be backed up. My boss didn't like it, but tough for him. I can't solve every problem that comes along.

Go to Adaptec's driver site http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/sup...iverindex.html and get the right drivers. I poked around a bit and they seem to have quite a few drivers for Netware 3.x so you're not up the creek after all. You'll have to know the exact model number of your SCSI adapter to get the right driver. hopefully the driver download contains install instructions or better yet, an install routine that will do it for you. At least get the tape drive installed and running, and explain to the owner of the server that they won't be able to backup open files. That is likely a limitation of Netware 3 and not the backup software.

Welp, its time to post again.... I just spent 8 hours rebuilding our LDAP server after a NT hissy-fit.

You should be able to use CA's ArcServe program. We use ArcServe 2000 to back up all our Novell 4/5 systems, EVEN open files, and VirusScan the backup as it occurs.

BUT.... you dont have 4 or 5 There IS hope though! ArcServIT, the older version, does support Novell 3.x and Open files as well. This is also known as ArcServ 6.6 BTW... BUT, as with most CA products, they cost an arm and a leg. And only available in europe it appears... Check http://www.ca.com for more details though.

A few more things you may want to consider. Novell no longer supports 3.x It maintains things on thier web site but that's pretty much it. 3.1x is not Y2K compliant if that is a consideration. Novell released 3.2 for that fix. I don't believe there is a downloadable NLM that will fix that issue. I don't recommend ArcServe 2000 for 3.x in fact I was on the phone with CA's tech support last week for another issue and we discussed 2000. If you have IPX/SPX runnig which you will tech support from CA recommends Arcserve 6. MacGyvers is right on as usaull about open files. Your client (in my opinion) will be better off at looking at Novell 5.1 upgrade. Novell is getting ready to release Version 6 soon. Netware 4.x,5.x and 6 are much easier to maintain.

I will eventually get the client into NT/2k
that is where my comfort zone is ... and
the software they want to start running likes
the NT/2k enviroment better.
it is just a matter of getting them through this issue. and waiting till september
( thats when they want to upgrade to the new server)
