Post Trying to rescue data from an oversized cdr

A friend just did me a copy of a film and since it was 728meg he overburned an 80min cd.
The film will play but will freeze right at the end which wouldn't be a problem BUT i cannot copy the file to my harddrive to shorten it..The copy process fails 10secs to go, i@ve tried both my cd writer and a dvd player.. same problem.
Is there anyway i can get this file off of the disk??
Thanks

if we are talking vcd , then the best one i have found is vcdgear @ www.vcdgear.com ,,,, 2 settings to do

1:fix mpeg errors yes!

2 (options) do not split mpeg

leave it running , it will suck your cpu ,,,,but u will get a usable dat = mpg ,

try using both your dvd and your cd/writer,

if nessesarry use nero drive speed to slow them down.

good luck with that

mpeg.
As it goes i've just managed to recover 99 percent of each file using a program called
'cdcheck'
the problem now is that xmpeg doesn't recognise the files as correct mpeg format.
They play fine, i've lost 5meg off the end of each(sorry the film came on 3 disks) one but thats not a problem.
My cdrw drive is not that good so unfortunately i cannot overburn the disks(the 3 files will fit)
so i'm recompressing them using the divx codec
Do you know of a program that lets me repair mpeg files?
E R R O R...

It did the job. I now have 3 fully functional mpeg files. now all i need is a program that will allow me to split them into smaller defined parts. I've tried vcdcutter but unfortunatelty its a trial and also crashes quite a lot.
Any suggestions?

okay mpack seems to be a good mpeg splitter. Only problem is it seems to have a join limit of 2gig??
At least it was able to split the second cd and then join cd1 with the first part of the 2nd and then the 2nd part of the 2nd cd with the 3rd.... 2 files which are presently being recoded.
Thanks

TMPGEnc ,,,file - mpg tools - merge and cut ,,u can add edit add and delete sections (ie finishing titles)

PS: try to d/load TMPGEnc plus ultra (30 day evaluation) ,,,the difference is that if u do a two pass VBR , then it caches the first pass and goes like the clappers!!!"

Okay SUMMARY for anyone needing to recover corrupted mpeg files on cd..

Use
1. cdcheck to recover file(s) from cd
2. vcdgear to fix mpeg errors
3. mpack to split mpeg files
(if you need to)
4. xmpeg(flask) to encode using divx codecs
(v.small files, v.good quality)
All are free to download , mpack is an unrestricted evaluation program with the occasional pop up registration window
