Slow writing on 24X CDRW

How come when my 24x CDRW drive is writing I always hear the disc spin up and spin down every 3 seconds instead of continuously writing and this makes writing CDs take more time than a 4x drive!

How to I make it write in a continous stream?

And no it's not my hard drive that's too slow I have a RAID 0 Array (200MB/Sec transfer rate).

maybe it,s set to write track at once instead of disk at once ,,,,what software (and ver) are u using?

Are you using XP, if so, you may want to check your apsi drivers/dll's, goto <a href="http://www.adaptec.com" target="_blank">Adaptec.com</a> and get the aspi software from there, that'll tell you what version your using, if any.

also if it is XP, your CD writer will be working in safe mode, so that's most probably why it spin up and down, to prtect the CD writer.

also check in your device manager to C if you drive controller is using PIO mode only, if so change it to DMA mode.

My CDRW seems to be running in UDMA2 mode. I am using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 with Direct CD for drive letter access. Wether I am saving 50MB of tiny files or just 1 50MB file it still spins up and down all the time making it VERY slow (it's 24x and seems to be slower than my old 4x).

It's much faster when making music CDs, but still does spin up and down sometimes. Also, when I burn CDs my system often freezes until the CD is complete, how do I fix this?

I'm using Windows XP, I looked for the ASPI program but it said not to run it on XP.

get rid of direct cd and update to the latest roxio patch, direct cd has compatibility issues with XP

You could try removing all other CD writing stuff and use Nero 5.5.9.0 & InCD 3.31. Also you don't need ASPI drivers for this. You should disable native XP CD writing support before you write any CD using InCD & Nero.

You can disable it as follows.

User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows explorer. Enable the tab marked "Remove CD burning features"

THIS DOES NOT STOP THIRD PARTY STUFF FROM WRITING CD & CDRW.

try this <a href="http://80.194.226.132/forum/downloadtracker.asp?download=../downloads/patches/aspi471.exe" target="_blank">Link</a> it has the aspi patch for XP, and does work, I'm using it on my machine, your CDRW does need it as my liteon (32x12x40) would only work in safe mode until I did this, due to the apsi layer software not being present in XP as it's been copyrighted by Adaptec, and M$ in their infinate wisdom wanted to move away from third party software.

Also go into your computer management > services and set the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service to Manual and stop it, if it isn't already, this will stop XP asking you what you want to does with the insertion of a blank CD.

I have to say Clickhere, I got really cross with XP native burning really quickly... And and I couldn't find anything about it apart from very bland explanations. When you drag and drop files, it then copies those files to a temp directory then tries to burn them - in essence doing the job twice.

As for drive letter copying, I found it gives system instabilities so what I now do it put a cdrw in, use Nero to burn the files, when I am done I copy the lot to a cdr for permanent storage and then get Nero to erase the CD.

Since I have just formatted, I might have another play with XP burning, before I turn it off and load nero again
