Angry Bottom Line -- I need to fix a networking problem with ME...

For the past 2 years, I have used DCC (Direct Cable Connection) to provide NICless nodes with temporary connectivity. DCC will allow all protocols binded to the Dialup Adapter in the networking portion of the Control Panel, so any program that uses IP or IPX would transparently use the paralell port instead of a NIC. I just recieved a new laptop (an IBM I Series), and it comes with ME preinstalled, and it has no floppy drive, so 'upgrading' to Win98 2nd edition would be difficult to say the least. My problem is that under ME, the TCP/IP option in the Network portion of the Control Panel no longer allows me to set the IP address of the interface, thereby neutering the whole program AND the laptop (which is actually not a bad machine...), since there is no DNS or DHCP servers on my network (it's just a three node network in my basement ) I can't use IP over the link. Has anybody ever found a workaround for this problem, keeping in mind that I don't have the money for a new PCICMA NIC?

P.S. Once again, bottom line, how do I set the IP address for the Dialup Adapter (I use so many big words -- I'm sorry, it's Ciscos fault, not mine )?

probably already checked this but has DCC been installed in the set up, check under the windows setup in the add remove programs icon in the control pannel. btw set the bios of the laptop to boot from cdrom first and put your 98 disk in away you go dont need a floppy drive

I read your problem and though I couldn't think of a solution, I could maybe shed some light on finding a possible solution. In windows Millennium the TCP/IP settings that use to found in Network place under TCP/IP properties for Dial up adapter have been moved to Network settings of each individual dial up connectiod (Properties on each individual dial up connection), in dial up networking. This of-course allows each dial up network connection to have different settings. Unfortunately in your case, because direct cable connection used dial up networking to work this removes this functionality. Unfortunately, I looked to see if under Millennium a null modem using a parallel cable could be set up those properties, and could not find one. I have used direct cable connection under Millennium and it has worked at least the file and printer/sharing but I don't think that is what you where asking. The only solution I see to your problem is to find a null modem for a parallel or serial cable driver. Download it, set up a dial up networking connection using that device, put in TCP/IP settings in the dial up connectiod. Millennium added functionality and ability to some users (allowed individual tcp/ip settings for each dial up connection), but unfortunately removed some for you.

I had this same problem after moving both my machines at home to ME, to make a long story short...

...WinME REQUIRES NetBEUI for direct connect.

This drove me nuts for a month when I finally found the solution somewhere (I think it was on Technet...) good luck and hope that does it for you!
...I don't get it...

Thats interesting to know... MS is removing NetBEUI from Windows XP
My brain went into standby mode and I can't get it to wake up, is there a BIOS patch for this?

Really? Nothing like making a problem even more complicated then it already is

My guess is to make things 'easier then ever' is that they will integrate NetBEUI right into the core of Windows and cover up their tracks That will show SAMBA who's BOSS
