I really don't know what is wrong with my cd-rom. When i loaded windoes me, the cdrom was working perfectly fine. Then all of a sudden it stopped detecting cd's. When i boot up, it detects ATAPI cdrom, in my computer the cdrom icon shows, but the cd's are not detected. It says 'Plesae insert CD' I really am very confused, please help me
Thanks in advance

Do you have another CD you can swap that one out with, say from a different system? I would check the easy stuff first. See if the cd works in a different system and take a known working cd drive and see if it will work in there.
That's a starting point, if the cd works in another system and/or a known working cd fails in your first system then I would start checking cables, ide connections, power supplies..and not exactly in that order.
Good Luck!

i have had similar, it was an old CD-rom and i must have disturbed the dust, my odd cure was rather than take it apart was to sit it on end for a day and hope the dust shifts, of course that only works if it is an old drive, otherwise it may be the head being dead, again that is for an old drive, give us more to work on
is it a new cd ?
does the IDE cable work properly and consistantly ?
etc...
good luck matey !!

another method is to remove the cdrom reboot then shut down and put back in , odd again but it kickstarts the machine, if this does not work enter safe mode and remove the drivers and reboot
i hope that this sorts it if not then send me a query and i shall think some more...

boot from a floppy with CD-ROM support (like the Windows ME boot disk) and check if it's working in DOS.
let us know.
