[RESOLVED] ?? Win98se - Win2K - WinME ??

I own all of Gates OSes (even Win95 and Win3.1) and I have heard a lot of criticism on WinME. Should I switch to Win98? Isn’t WinME supposed to be better in every way?

At the moment I am dual booting Win2K and WinME on the Tyan Trinity MOBO, 10GB HD, 128MB RAM, Voodoo3 1000, Pent 550.

Only if you have the proper Hardware! I have WinMe on two systems, and had no problems but I have read ugly things in regards to WinMe.

I prefer Win2K!

ME is quirky with some hardware. I have a PII with pretty common hardware. It works great. But have seen many computers that have all sorts of problems. If its for home use and your hardware is supported. Then go for it. But it is not all that different than 98se.

I installed ME at home and had nothing but problems and had to resort back to 98.
I have only had a few systems here with ME problems and they were all hardware related but the same hardware worked in 98.
So yes it seems to be quirky with hardware and I agree it isnt much better than 98.

All I get is a BSOD and a lock-up once and a while. But what about preformance??

Because of the restore function running in the background you get a performance hit compared to W98. Also the media player sucks up alot of resources when it is up. It is not a bad OS, but if you know what you are doing I would recommend staying with W98.

Switch to Win2k. I did and never once have I regretted it. I regretted installing ME on my system to give it a good run through.

If your hardware supports W2K, I will agree with Darren. W2K is more stable than Win Me!

Good point. If you have it running and aren't having any problems then leave it be. WinME is a hate it or love it OS. You'd know right away if it wasn't going to work for you. As for hardware support that will increase with time. I run it myself with a Celeron 800, only 64MB's of ram, a 30GB hdd, a D-link ethernet card for the cable modem and an HP cd-burner and I have no problems with it at all. I'll add more ram eventually because that will gain you the most performance increase with the least amount of cash.

Switch to Win2k. I switched from 98SE to Win2K. When I got a new Sony laptop preloaded with ME, it constantly crashed, so I upgraded to 2k one day later.

I think it really depends on what your doing with your computer...if your running a game box I'd stay with ME or 98....win2k isn't much in the way of a gaming os

I did and then again didnt like the fact that it lost dos(for teh most part) it boots faster and runs faster, but anything that has to use dos doesnt want to work right at least thats been my experience, i have me but went back to 98se.If you can try dual booting

Thanx, see I can't just use Windows 2000 Pro because I have a Turtle Beach Montego II Quadzilla sound card and the two back speakers don't work. It only works in Windows 9x.

Don't get ME if you don't have to. The only reason I'm running it is because it's OEM. I had bought ME for my earlier computer (came with free zip drive..I figured what the heck) and all I ended up with was crash after crash after crash. Not just hardware, but software too...soooo...don't waste the money on it. If you need to upgrade, for say USB, get 98SE....and wait for the next version of windows....which, if ME is any indication, will be full of nice friendly(or not so friendly) bugs.
