    Question DVD/CD-ROM drive trouble

I don't know, every now and then my CD-ROM drive seems to want to take forever to access data from a CD. It will start off normal, then start thumpin', clunkin' and slammin' real loud. When that happens I have to eject the CD and reload it. Then it seems to be ok for awhile, then it'll act up again. Some days it does it, others it don't.

I've seen this before and cleaning the CD and cleaning the optical pickup usually fixes this, but not on my system. I have no problems with playing DVD's and the drive's only 4 months old. When the drive works properly it doesn't seem to make any unusual noise.

It's an ACER 10x DVD-ROM & 40x CD-ROM drive. I bought this drive to replace a Creative 32x CD-ROM drive which was doing the exact same thing. I've reprogrammed and re-installed all of the drivers for my system. Both of these drives have done it through Win98/Me/W2K. I don't think it's my IDE controller because I've had them set as primary slave with the proper jumper settings and secondary master/slave with the proper jumper settings. I've changed cache, DMA, and sync data transfer settings. Unchecked and re-checked dis-connect settings. I don't know, what gives?? Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks

Have you tried reprogramming your computer?

Yes, as you can see by my previous post I had. I solved my problem 4 months ago by changing an IDE cable. Thanks for the reply though. <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">
