new win-me install - can't do anything!
Greetings all-
This one is a real stumper. This is a Compaq Presario 5695. It originally had Win 98 on it. This system has some extras - DVD, Yamaha CDRW, and a zip drive. Also has 2 hard drives. Anyway, system ran fine in Win98. The customer purchased the Win ME upgrade, and installed.
Now Win ME will boot up completely. The start menu and taskbar will appear for maybe a second and then disappear. There are no icons on the screen. The only thing that does show is the background image, and the mouse. Mouse clicking does nothing. The only thing that responds is Ctrl-Alt-Del.
It will boot in safe mode, but does the exact same thing.
I can boot with a Win95 startup disk, and access the hard drives. All data is there.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Compaq has not been any help, and I cannot ask Microsoft because I cannot get the product ID of Windows ME.
Thanks,
Al

I had this problem before on another system. The only cure I had was to format and install from the upgrade disk. All you need is the 98 disk to hand if you have not done this before.
I know this is not the answer, so if someone has a better suggestion, please let us know. <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">

This may help you can go to command safe prompt and reinstall windows ME from the c:\win9x directory you copy from the d:\win9x directory of CDrom. At the command safe prompt of c:\win9x do setup and it will rebuild the windows directory without making you reinstall all your programs. Try it and see, may help.

Compaq Geek:
Unfortunately Compaq won't support anything but the OS that ships on it. Its a stupid policy we have but they are very admimant about it.
