    Exclamation What Are These?

I am running Windows Me and want to know what these items are and what their function is. They all start up at boot. Are they necessary to keep at startup? I mean, can I uncheck them in msconfig in the startup directory? If this helps, I have disabled system restore in the system/troubleshooting directory, as I don't want it running.:

    Bwdelay
    delay (or "delayrun.exe")
    hpsysdrv
    MMTray
    PCHealth
    *StateMgr
    hpfsched
    SSDPSRV
    USBMMKBD
    LoadPowerProfile
    TaskMonitor

By the way, this is my first post. I love this forum. There seems to be so many people that know a whole lot about computers here. So, forgive me if my question is an easy one.

Uncheck everything except load power profile then make sure your modem/scanner/printer and other stuff works. Don't worry you can play with it - what you uncheck will not dissapear on reboot - they are held in the reg.

Load power profile is the thing that makes your monitor go off and hard disks shut down and stuff to power down when idle for too long

Here is what I would do. I don't take responsibility for any changes though.

    Bwdelay - DISABLE
    delay (or "delayrun.exe") - DISABLE
    hpsysdrv - ?
MMTray - PROBABLY A KEYBOARD THING
PCHealth - TEMP MONITOR, I'd disble it
    *StateMgr - DISABLE
hpfsched - DEFINATELY DISABLE FOR ME, I don't like schedulers.
    SSDPSRV - ?
USBMMKBD - Keep this for your usb keyboard
    LoadPowerProfile - KEEP
    TaskMonitor - KEEP

    Question

Thanks for the input guys. I would still like to know, however, WHAT these items are and what their function is. This way I will be informed enough in the future if I decide to prevent one or all of these items from starting up at boot. Different systems and system configurations require different tweaking arrangements. Therefore, I need to know what they are so that I can decide whether I need them or not in future, different setups.

hpsysdrv looks like an hp printer driver...do you have an hp printer installed? Did you use their software to install it...if so uninstall their software (piece of cr@p) and reinstall just the driver not all that fancy stuff that gets in the way.

MMTray = Places a Music Box icon in the sys tray. Application works well without it.

PCHealth = The part of ME which provides the Restore functionality.

StatMgr = Another of the ME Restore feature

SSPDSRV = Provides Simple Service Discovery Protocol and General Architecture (GENA) services for Plug and Play.

LoadPowerProfile = Required if you are using Power Management. Usually 2 instances of this.

TaskMonitor = Used by Windows to keep track of rate of usage of programs to make defragmenting more efficient.

HPsysdrv = I've been told this is part of the Restore function as well.

    USBMMKBD = USB keyboard support

hpfsched = A program that pops up to remind you to register a new HP scanner/printer.

Ok folks. You have been more than helpful! I have found the description to all I have running except 2 things. Miphnik, thanks so much. For anyone wanting a great website to go to for this stuff, just visit this site: http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Uncheck.htm It list TONS of startup items. I found it on the web after searching forever. However, there are 2 that I CANNOT FIND ANYHERE. Does anyone known what these are? They are:

    Bwdelay
    delay (or "delayrun.exe")

Again, thanks everyone! I really appreciate the help.

Whatever they are, you probably don't need them. Try doing a search on your c: drive for the exact filenames it's calling (delayrun.exe) and look at the folder it is in. Maybe the name of the folder will give you a clue as to what program put it there.

Regardless, I think I would remove them from the startup group!

I agree with imarolan. I did some searching for delay.exe and the only thing I was coming up with was VBS related stuff. Based on that I'd disable it at the least if it were me.
