    cd -rom not reading

every time we put a cd into the drive it responds by posting a message "system not ready" then two buttons, "retry" "cancel".

We are running win98. When we looked in device drivers it said that there were no problems with the cd. We are reletively new to this sort of problem, so if the jargon could be kept to a minimum that would be great. Can someone please help:-(

First point and click to my computer, then control panel and then system devices. Click the plus sign next to the cdrom and then click on the settings tab for the cdrom. Make sure the "use DMA" box is unchecked. I have seen many cdroms that will do this if using dma. Good luck!
