Serious virul prob
Hi, am not true tech but hope yo'll dont mind me posting.
Got a call from friend: cant get into win (98se) and so go around and try booting in safe and get a himem.sys error message, somthing like: hxd memory accsess or somthing. After this got message saying that himem.sys was corrupted or missing so tried booting form cdrom and just as entereing setup got a message saying somthing trying to write to boot block.
So I think its virus and need some help as have little xp with such seroius infections.

first you will need a Win98 boot disk.
i suggest going to Bootdisk and downloading F-PROT antivirus from the Utilities section. it is a self extracting file that puts all the antivirus files on a 3.5 inch floppy.
boot the infected system with the Win98 boot disk and then insert the f-prot disk you made and type f-prot and follow the on-screen prompts.
if my guess is correct (and it is only a guess) the Windows directory on the hard-drive is gone.
good luck!

Flabooble!
I've seen this a dozen time - don't know why but 98 just can't find himem.sys once in a while. it's there but it don't see it. Don't know why.
I found that a few cold boots and walking away from the machine for a day or so helped a lot. I know this isn't the best tech advice but that was my solution and it does work. You might want to try to go to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx? and see if they have a better answer. Even if this works - run a scan with an updated scanner anyway.

Boot Block? Try shutting off the Mainboard (boot) antivirus in the BIOS. You normally cannot load an OS with this enabled.

Well in the end I must say that I'm sorry to bother you guys. I'd unfortunatly been interupted whilst writting the post so didnt get the full message out. One of the things that foxed me was that the boot disk I'd used didnt boot, I guess that it was damaged, even though it was almost new.
I'd tried the vbuster disk b4 and tried it agin but that didnt find anything.
In the end I went round my friends house again and tried another boot disk, format C...... And its all ok now. Its been a few days so I presume if it was a virus that it would have came back by now, especially as he (my friend ) has a habit of allowing all and sundrie programs to install on his system and that knowing this the last time I sorted out his system I partitioned his drive.
I do keep telling him that not every program that says it will help your system will but thats your average home user I guess.......
'We apoligise for the inconvienience' Gods final message to his creations.
