Testing ATM between two machines

I am trying to test out two fiber ATM cards. Is it possible to do this without going through an ATM hub or switch. Can I just cross the cables over and hook up the two machines directly?

I am new to ATM, any help would be great.

Theoretically, you should be able to plug your fiber link straight from one machine to the next, providing the connectors allow it.

If it doesn't work one way, try inverting one end of the cable.

Also, you may have to set up a virtual ATM card in your network configuration, if that hasn't been don already.

It would help if you specified which ATM NICs you're using though.

I am using ForeRunner ATM adapters with ST fiber connections. They are being installed in a box with FreeBSD. I think we have the cables connected correctly for this. I have the transmit from one going to the receive on the other, and vice versa. By the lights on the cards, it looks like I'm getting a connection, but I cant get the cards to communicate. I have IP addresses set for the cards, but I think I'm missing something with the ATM address.

I've been using the same cards (HE model) on some servers at work. They are hooked up to an ESX-3000 ATM/IP switch and I've never had to cross-connect ForeRunner cards directly.

Also, I'm not at all familiar with the setup and configuration under Linux/UNIX, as our machines run WinNT.

But I will try to find something out from my sources. I'll get back to you

I've found this: Marconi Support.

It points out that the HE155 (the cards I'm currently using) are *not* supported under FreeBSD. WinNT platforms, SGI and Sun (Solaris) are listed though.

You can check out your cards there also.

I'm using the PCA-200EPC/OC3ST

I was told that it would work with FreeBSD, but I havent found that out forsure.
