    Red face can't recognise printer

After reformatting and reloading win98 SE onto desktop and setting up network with my laptop I am having a problem getting the printers to work.
On the lap top is a HP 1220C hooked up with a USB connection. I installed it on mine but it keeps saying printer is offline. After 2 hours on support with HP and 4 hours with microsoft still can not get it to work. Any suggestion?????

Are you trying to connect to the printer via the network? Try mapping the port again. Also something else you could try is connect the printer (you said usb right?) into the other USB port. The network might be trying to map usbport#1 and the printer is connected to usbport#2. Also make sure you have the latest print drivers on both systems.

Ok, you have a combined 6 hours of tech support, and I am sure you invested some time on your own. Maybe you should disclose what has been tried already, so we don't tread on the same ground.

Silly Suggestions: check power to printer, check USB cable connections, replace cable to trouble shoot...

If network is the problem, can you connect with the laptop to shares on the PC with the printer?

Maybe just try a parallel connection too.

    Ok, standard solutions:

    1) Make sure the "server" is on-line b4 you boot the "client" else it won't see the printer

    2) The system will "hang" if you try and print to the "server" when the client doesn't see it. (See above) Close the app and try again

    3) Try changing the data format to RAW

    4) Make sure you got the exact right drivers on the client. The best way is to delete the printer off the client, go network neighbourhood, double-click the shared printer (OH YEAH, you have it shared? Correct Share Name? Correct machine name? Appropriate permissions [The World, Full Control]? and let the wizard download the drivers from the "server" But, HP often have two types of driver, one for the "server" [pcl] and one for the "client", and you may have to load the disk programme.

    Good luck!
