    Post One Computer not Avalible?

I have a DSL/Cable router that I use for my network, with 3 computers hooked up constantly. I keep one cable vacante for when I work on a computer. Win 2000 on the main computer, win98se on all the rest. I'm working on a unit now that I had previously hooked to the network. The owner brought me a larger used HD to install. Now I'm trying to get it back on the network so that I can do the win update thing. All computers see the 4th computer, but the 4th computer doesn't see anyone else!

Anybody know what I missed. I can't figure this out, have had dozens of computers hooked up this way, with this same network card. Could it be the card? But why would all the rest see the computer?

    Any seggestions!!!

What OS are you using on your clients pc? Also make sure that all the protocols are the same.

All are win98se, except the main its W2k. All protocalls match per unit.

    Thanks for your input!.

I've seen this before several times. The first thing that I would do is just double check all the settings. (I once spent over 3 hours working on a Windows NT network trying to get the BDC to "see" the PDC. After hacking the registry, testing the switch etc. I double checked my settings and found out that I had typed the wrong IP address for the WINS server...)

Make sure they are on the same workgroup and network protocol. I would also remove all networking items and then reboot in safe-mode and remove all NIC's from device manager and then reboot and reinstall the NIC and network settings.

Let me know if you got it working.

Can #4 ping everyone? Try mapping drives to the others by unc if so. Win98's network browser is suspect, ive has it show nothing but be fully connected... chek the post below about a similar problem for more ideas.....

This may be completely out of left field, but don't those 4 port 'Linksys' type routers say in the owners manual that when you use the 'uplink' or 'WAN' port that you can't use one of the other regular ports? Meaning you can only hook up 3 PCs and your DSL. Try taking a PC or 2 out of the equation.

Maybe the 'uplink' and 'WAN' are seperate and I'm just in need of sleep <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Most models of Linksys have #1 and Uplink linked and WAN is at the other side of #4.

I found what the cause was for this situation on this computer in question. But it leads me to a new question.

I was intially installing the network card on the ISA/PCI shared slot of the mother board. I tryed 4 different network cards with no luck resolving the issue.

But this last time of installing the network card I put it in a different PCI slot and BINGO its now connected to the network and working fine.

Could it be that the PCI slot that is shared with the ISA slot is bad? Or that the network card just didn't want to function properly in that PCI slot?

Would like to get some input on this issue!

    Thanks for everyones help!

2 things I can think of that would do that.

Putting the NIC in a new slot should have given in a different IRQ. It may have been sharing an IRQ with a device and not wanting to work even though the Device Manager woud tell you no conflicts. Devices can share an IRQ, yet when they both try to do something (Interupt the
Processor with a request on the same line) then you have trouble. Maybe that was the case. Don't know from personal experience if that is it.

Or I once seated and reseated a AGP video card and on the fifth time it finally worked. And I was seating it correctly, the card had no dust etc. However that video card flat out didn't even work in the BIOS (no video to boot with)let alone windoze, which your NIC seems to have done.

Have you made sure that File and print sharing is turned on?
