    Matridom thanks. Yes, I've tried that! One other thing I've tried is since the modem is also USB capable (toshiba pcx1100u), I've loaded the USB drivers and have successfully connected. Seems to indicate a hardware problem when using nic. If the nic, cat5 and cable modem is not the problem then what hardware wise could it be?

    thanks....d

    Have you tried replacing the NIC yet?

    Are your computers connected to the same hub? If they are, give PC1 a static address one up from PC2 with the same subnet mask and see if you can ping each other.

    I'm reposting the original problem below:
    ++++++++++++
    Here's the short version: Using a Linksys BEFSR41 router to share cable internet connection with 2 PCs. PCs using DHCP to obtain ips from router. Last night, unable to browse internet. Cable lights all indicate ok. To eliminate router as problem, plugged PC1 directly to cable. Could not get ip. Plugged PC2 directly to cable and this one can get ip. RR Tech says that when PC1 plugged in, he says that he sees 2 mac addresses fighting for ip. Advised that I should reload drivers for nic which I will try later today. Anyone experience this problem?

    +++++++++++++++++++++

    Sowulo, thanks. Yes, I've tried with several different nics on PC1 with no success. I'm unable to get an ip from the cable with PC1 directly plugged into the modem (unable to contact DHCP server, timed out). The router can't get an ip from the cable either. But PC2 can get an ip plugged straight into the modem. A suggestion was to clone PC2s mac to the router but that didn't work either. USB on PC1, however, works.
    From what I've tried, I've ruled out the modem as a problem, ruled out the nic, ruled out the cables, ruled out XP (repaired), used netsh to refresh tcpip. Might there be something hardware wise that's broken?

    Have you ever been able to get an IP other than with PC2?

    It seems to me that the problem is on RR's end. Maybe you got a tech that was new the first time you called, I'd call them back again.

    What's you current setup? Do you have the cable modem going into a router and then both PC's plugged into the router, or are you using a hub? Have you tried running the cable modem directly into PC1?

    Sowulo,
    Yes. If you kindly read my original post, it might help clear things up. I was using a router with both PC1 and PC2 plugged into the router. Suddenly could not browse the internet on either PCs. Took the router out and plugged PC1 straight into the modem, no ip. Plugged PC2 straight into the modem, yes ip.
    I've tried just about everything on PC1 (new nics, new cat5 cables, repair XP, new drivers, different PCI slots, different nics but no happiness. Additionally, I've rebooted into ME (dual boot) and no ip either in ME. Something's not working but I have no idea what? Any one?

    thanks.....d;(

    With your original configuration going through your router, what IP address did PC2 get? Was it a 192.168.x.x number or was it an actual IP from RR?

    It seems to me tho if it just out of the blue quit working that it would be a problem on RR's end. Have you tried calling them again?

    The only thing I can think of at this point is that RR's IP addresses are statically tied to the MAC address, in which case you would have to call them and give them the MAC address of your router in order to get an IP. That would make sense except for the part where you say it was working fine until recently.

    I have the same router Two things might fix your problem

    1. Keep both computers on log on screen and reset the router. This will redo the settings between the router and the two computers.

    2. Get a firmware update from linksys. This might fix the problem( if you are wondering how this will fix a problem ie. I could not run starcraft in multiplayer until I did a firmware update.)

    Remember that when you reset the router this will delete the firmware update.

    Thanks for all the helpful suggestions but I think the there is something wrong with the motherboard. The nics are detected but they're not functioning quite right in any slot whether in XP or ME. Very strange though that when connected to the router it acquires the 192.168 ips but when plugged into the cable it drops in and out (like the cat5 was bad) and cannot acquire an ip from RRunner. I've connected through USB and sharing the connection through the same nic with the other PC using a crossover. Maybe I'll get a USB router. I'll keep plugging away at it and post if the problem goes away or if I figure it out. Thanks again to all....d

    I've ask before but maybe it got lost some place, Have you ask RoadRunner to bind the routers Mac address to their system?

    You may have had pc2 when RR was installed to your location, and it’s the only one bound to there their system

    RoadRunner uses the MAC address to work on their cable network. Call tech support and ask what the mac address is that they have, check that with the Mac addy of your cards (PC1 & PC2) its going to be PC2 that they have bound, give them the Mac addy from the router. Should have it up in a half an hour or so....
