    Post 9x shares / 2k shares

I know under 2k you can make a share and call it windrivers$ (note dollar sign) and it won't show up on the network, unless you request it, and have rights, and so on..but does that work with 9x? I would try it, but I'm not at home right now.

Oh, I see, thanks. Guess I work too much, don't get time to game - which really sux cause I thought Doom was the best thing to ever happen when it came out, and so much more, and better as I understand, has come out since then. Maybe one day...

Adding the $ to the end of a share name creates a hidden share - not netbios advertised.

And there is usually a default share called (driveletter)$ which only admins can access.

My experience is that the 9x boxes do not create this share by default. The default drive letter hidden share is an NT based feature for administration purposes. In 9x you must use ipc$. This gives you an administrative virtual connection to the registry. But I am unaware of other default shares that are set up for 9x. Though I am sure there are some that exist.

I try to avoid 9x boxes if possible. At home, I don't have a 9x box around, just NT based machines. I just use the (driveletter)$ shares(admin only) at home to prevent attacks.

I was just throwing that out there because the original question was about hidden shares in 9x. Don't want him to try and use the default hidden share on his 9x box, then post a thread asking why it isn't there.
