    Post Disappearing network

Here's the background info to start off.
    Computer 1:
    HP Celeron 400
    96mb ram
    Computer 2:
    K6-2/350
    64mb ram

Both connected to a cable modem via a Linksys hub. Both access the internet fine. I Computer 1 up to share it's printer and was successful in doing so, felt pretty good that it went so easy. Walked away from the computer for a couple of hours and came back. I could no longer see Computer 1 from Computer 2 and vice versa in Network Neighborhood, but could still print from Computer 2 to Computer 1's printer. I restarted both computers hoping things would return to a semblance of normalcy (sp).

Upon restart I was able to only see Computer 1 on Computer 1 in Network Neighborhood and Computer 2 on Computer 2. Now after much ranting and raving I just checked Network Neighborhood again (after about 30 minutes) and am able to see both computers on each machine again. <IMG SRC="smilies/mad.gif" border="0">

Is this caused by information having to go through @Home or is there something I can do to eliviate this problem? <IMG SRC="smilies/confused.gif" border="0">

I have an idea of what it might be. In the hub you may have faulty wire's in your CAT5(ethernet cable). Try using different straight through cable. Also another possibility coul be that your hub has bad ports. try putting the connections in different ports.
If it is a softwawre problem, then in an eralier post, you will need to reload your tcp/ip. Before that, though check to see that both computers use the sam client. Either they both use a client for Microsoft Networks, Client for Windows Family Logon, ect. If not change it so that they can.

The way you describe it it sounds like a Master Browser problem or a NetBIOS problem.

Since you say you only can't see the other computer (browse) in network neigboprhood but can still print - it's probably a minor issue.

you can also access sthe other computer by typing a UNC path in start-> run ..

    \\ipaddress\sharename (e.g \\24.165.1.155\admin$

    or

    \\computername\sharename (e.g. \\Compaq\music)

It's obvious you use TCP/IP and get the IP address Assigned by @Home.

    you didn't mention what O/S you're using..

I'm guessing they're both Win9x (or you would have used "my network places" instead of "Network neighborhood" )

anyway - you must set One of the computers to be a Master Browser.
go to the "File and print sharing" properties (in Network properties)
set on computer to "Browse Master = On"
and the Other to "Browse Master = OFF"

also make sure that you enable "netBIOS over TCP/IP" in TCP/IP properties.

    Hope it helps.
