win2k & Me Network & ICS
Heres my goal ... set up two computers one with win2k (Client) and a second with WinME (host) (i know winME sucks) and share the internet ... very simple and easy thing I thought .. but for some reason I cant do it .. Long story as to why I want win2k client and winME the host but i need it this way
Heres my setup:
2 100TX netgear NIC with crossover cables to both system's with same model card (no router, no hub, just straight connected), both computer are FAT32 .. security is not a issue
Heres the problem:
Its all set up in the win2k system i can go into a winME system and do whatever i like I have file sharing on everything (c:,d:,e:,f:, (share cd roms to), however when im at the winME system going to the Win2k system its a no go says it doesnt have premissions, (also I can print from the Win2k to WinMe with no problems) I have set up a user accound on the win2k system for the winME machine, but with the no premissions im unble to use it
I have also gone and made new shares in C: and D: on the win2k machine so the dirves can be shared from Win2k to WinME, so as of now all four drives on winME are set to share and all 4 drives on Win2k are set to share.
Network settings:
Win2k Machine: Client for ms networks, file and printer sharing, Intenret Tcp/IP, NetBEUI protocol I have it set to ip address 192.168.1.2 with gateway 255.255.255.0,Workgroup is workgroup
WinME Machine: client for ms networks, dialup adapter, ethernet adpter, NETBEUI -dialup adapter, NETBEUI - ethernet adapter, TCP/IP - dialup adapter, TCP/IP - ethernet adapter, file and printer sharing for ms networks . I Have ip address 192.168.1.1 with gateway 255.255.255.0 Workgroup is workgroup
The reason for the manual mode is the slowness and forever it takes loading windows when its on auto, now does anyone have any suggestions on this .. what my problem is and how to fix it

hey Jva nice to see you again
it appears that this is a problem with mixed networks. I've had the same problem myself (now all the computers are running 2k).
I managed to dig this up, it may fix the slow network browsing issue:
BROWSING SPEEDUP
... Suggested by Ricky Johnson ([email protected]).
This tip works on ALL Windows 95/98/ME and
NT4/2000 systems with MS Internet Explorer 4/5/6 installed.
This Registry tip speeds up internet/remote (using Windows
Explorer and/or Internet Explorer) browsing process considerably on most MS Windows 32-bit machines connected to a network
and/or remote computer(s).
This actually fixes a BUG in MS Windows OSes that scan shared (remote) folders/files across the
network for Scheduled Tasks, and can add a delay as long as 30 seconds (!), because it uses extra time to search the remote
computer(s).
To do this, open Regedit (Win95/98/ME) or Regedt32 (WinNT4/2000) and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace
Highlight this value:
{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}
and delete it:
right-click on it -> select Delete -> click OK.
RECOMMENDED: Export (BACKUP) this Registry key
to a REG file FIRST, to be able to restore it (by running the REG file) if necessary. In Regedit: highlight the key name
in the left hand pane -> click "Registry" from the menu -> select "Export Registry File..." -> type a file name in the "File
name" field -> browse to the destination of your choice -> push the Save button.
This Registry change takes effect
immediately.
Just start MS IE while connected to the network/internet to see the difference.
NOTE: Upgrading to a newer MS Internet Explorer release may add this key to your Registry during Setup,
therefore you may need to delete it again after installing MS IE.
As for the permissions, that's default Win2k policy, for security reasons..
Are you having a problem with the Internet sharing or just the network?
good luck

Are you friggin NUTS?? Editing the registry to fix a networking problem that has been explained/fixed here before??? Registry editing is a LAST resort...

The main machine that is set up with ICS should be 192.168.1.1 with a subnetmask 255.255.255.0
The other machine would be 192.168.1.2 with subnetmask 255.255.255.0
So that would make your gateway 192.168.1.1 on the other machine.
An obstacle is something you see when you take your eyes off your goal.

Hmmm, Eagle...shouldn't the ICS host be 192.168.0.1?
JvaGuy, I suggest you sort out the basic connectivity of the network first. Start by dumping the NetBEUI protocol as you don't need it. Also, when you say your Gateway is 255.255.255.0, surely you mean the SubnetMask?
Get rid of the Dial-Up Adapter entry on the Win ME machines.
Once you have done this, ensure that the ICS Host (your Win2k machine in this scenario) dials and connects to the Net with no problem. Then share out the Modem. If, as you have stated, the ICS hosts IP addy is 192.168.1.1, the ICS procedure will change it to 192.168.0.1. Go around to your workstations and change their IP addy's to 192.168.0.2 etc. This should sort out the ICS problem.
I had a recent post on the Forum regarding ICS issues here

Actually, JvaGuy got the network working last night (with help from SNAFU, Rebel J, and Myself) and is now working on the ICS..

I hate ICS, I spent weeks trying to configure it between a win2k machine and 2 winme machines. Then..sent from the skies, WinProxy fell down to me and it's great! I love it. Very simple to set up, and everything works great. You have to try this one!

I second third and fourth that, WTF does he think this is!
I have set up ICS many times, and never gone NEAR the registry.
Just make sure the server system is on 192.168.0.1, and the clients are set to automatically obtain IP and it will all work. Just out of interest JVA, why do u have NETBEUI, i find pure TCP/IP is MUCH easier to manage.
Burn.

These problems also occur to me and so far I had a very good respond from 'Fubarian' about WIN9.x/ME to Win2k Permissions problem:
Do it this way -
whatever your login / password for 98 is (the network name / pw ) make that an account for win2k. if you right click on my computer, go to manage, go to users and groups, users, and add user...make the login / pw identical to the 9x. On the give file or drive you want to share, right click on it, go to permissions and add that user. If you DO NOT WANT that person to have the ability to write to that directory, LEAVE IT BLANK!!!!!!!!
This worked for me so try it!
About the ICS(internet connection sharing) very simple.. IF your win98 had the connection for internet and wants to share w/ win2k, you only need to add-on ICS from Windows Components. if your connection from above is working properly then there shouldn't be any usual problem.... Now, when Win2k got the internet connection and want to share with another peer-peer machine, you need to ENABLE this option manually. Takes Dial-up connection for instant, in Dial-Up connection from Win2k you need to right-click on MY CONNECTION(your ISP dial-up) and roll down to PROPERTIES.... in the properties window, select Sharing Tab (you'll see like General-Option-...-Sharing) there'll be a place where you can check on for ICS(it said "Enable Internet Connection for this Connection").
Last, I think From Control Panel - Administration Tools - Services you need to go down the menu where it said "Internet Connection Sharing" and manually Start that service..
That's all..
