Red face Can't browse W2K Network

    Hi All,

Not sure if this a network problem or a W2K problem.

W2K advance server running W2K pro clients. Try to browse thru' network neighbourhood to server located data from the clients, and receive error message:
"an invalid operation as performed on an active network connection"

However, if you use the long browse names i.e.
\\servername\share\location\ you can access the data, but some apps need the ability to browse to the data.

Have checked MS, and TechNET, but no joy.

    Any ideas??

    Tnanx in advance

if file/print sharing isn't turned on for each machine, I don't think they'll turn up.

if you can ping the comp, and do the \\ bit, then I wouldn't worry about it

    Thanx Fubarian,

I have already checked that file and print sharing is enabled on all the clients.

This appears to be a browsing issue/ and or permissoins issue, but the error message implies that a connection can not be made due network card or connection problem.

    Any further help or advise?

What antivirus are these machines running? It appears the Trend products can cause these problems...
    <a href="http://solutionbank.antivirus.com/solutions/solutionDetail.asp?solutionID=10523" target="_blank">solution here</a>

Failing that I have come across an odd reference to this registry key

"If you only have one DC, try setting the following registry key to "TRUE" on your DC: IsDomainMaster
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Browsers\Parameters"

And this reference to setup of the nics

"The network there is still running on 10/100Mb hubs (will be a switch soon). The server-NIC's were configured as hardware-default (100Mb full-duplex in this case), and that was the problem! Hubs only work on half-duplex. After changing the setting to 100Mb half-duplex, all worked fine"

Hope this is helpful... or at least gives you a clue
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

What is the error code#? I have seen this, or an issue very similar, discussed on the Microsoft KnowledgeBase, but I can't remember the details. Possibly relates to Advanced Server running a combination of certain services with AD? Sorry, I guess that wasn't much help. Give us an update when you get things figured out...

Checked the error code and it is 1230.

    Any Help?

Still having problems even though you can use long browse, some apps don't like it.

I have looked at other forum's and on the MS KB, and there are other people out there with the same problem, but no one has yet come up with a suitable answer.

So, anybody out there with any further clues, please stand up!

    Thanx

    I found <a href="http://www.anetforums.com/thread.asp?Action=Read&ThreadIndex=276" target="_blank">this thread on another forum</a> discussing a similar issue.

Have you tried taking the offending workstation back to workgroup status and then rejoining the domain?

    Thumbs up

    Thanx ru257,

Last time looked on MS site or TechNET, this KB article didn't exist, but seems like MS have had to do a fix recently.

I am on this customers site next week ,and will apply the fix, and let you know the result.

    Exclamation

Hi All, Finally managed to edit the registry and do the fix, can now browse without an error message!

    BUT!,

when I do browse to the server via network neighourhood, there are no other resources listed in the window at all? So it has stopped the error message, but not fully fixed the problem.

This can't be right?, Can it?

    Any more idea's?

    Thanx in advance.
