    Post cable modem losing signal?

    I have a cable modem and it's connected to a router. For many months, I have been able to use my cable modem without any difficulty. Lately, it seems that I'm losing my connection, intermittantly. After I power cycle the modem and router, everything is o.k. So far, everything is o.k., and I even updated the router's firmware.

    Should I lose my connection again, what could possibly be the cause?

    Call your ISP technical support and let them know. But before you do that, see if you can recreate the problem WITHOUT using the router as they may blame your troubles on that.

    i would also keep a log every time the signal drops. i went through this with my isp some time ago and they thought i was just IE chalanged. i kept a log and showed it to one of the supervisors when they came over for a house call and they put a signal monitor on my connection.

    turns out the cable in the junction box down the street was loose and was expanding and contracting with the temp causing the ocasional signal loss. in the end the log is what convinced them the problem was on their end.

    Post some more specifics. What is the brand of router? What about the cable modem brand?

    This has happens to me intermittently and it didn't seem to start until I hooked up a cheapo Belkin router. I am running an old Netgear cable modem. (I don't know the model off the top of my head.)

    Everything seems to be working fine, now.

    As I look at this from a different perspective, I don't think this is a matter of my cable modem losing its signal. I think it's a matter of my router not releasing and renewing the ip address that is assigned to my cable modem, when the mac lease expires. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    hmmm, what make router are you using? I'm using a netgear rt314 and it renews on it's own and i think the linksys does(?). have you tried just pluging one machine in to the cable modem to see if you have the same problem?

    So far, I have yet to try using the modem without the router. I have been conducting some research, and it may be possible that I might have an incorrect setting on my router. Regardless, I will try using the modem without a router.

    This may not be the problem but we were having the EXACT same problem you are. We'd be on the internet giong along fine and then it would drop the connection. Power cycling would fix it. Thought at first it was a defective modem, but after some investigation, it turns out that the modem (Best Data CMX110) wasn't compatible with Comcast or Comcast wasn't compatible with it - depending on who you talked to.

    Called best Data and they're going to replace the modem for free with one that will work.

    Again, don't know if this has anything to do with your problem or not, but might be worth checking into.

    they could be working on the lines..

    I had this problem. I also had them come down and rewire my cable in my house for me they said "Couldnt beleive this cable worked."

    after that no problems
