Angry ADSL router problem

Hi all, perhaps someone cleverer than myself [not hard] can point me in the right direction and save whats left of my receeding hairline.

I have purchased an ADSL Ethernet router from dabs.com in the UK model AMX-CA64E a dabs value range item.
http://www.dabs.com/products/prod-search.asp?action=search&refp=AMX-CA64E+&mid=010&tid=334&ob=manufacturer&obd=asc&sta b=ref&p=&lp=&up=&mc=&sc=&Refine.x=38&Refine.y=15

[Looking at the FCC id its actually made by www.cnet.com/tw model CNAD 804-NF]

Anyway after a couple of days trying to configure the ADSL connection I finally managed to get it working, sort of.
I can use the home network alright and all connection appear stable and I can get it to connect to the British Telecoms PPPoA non statically assigned IP after much tweaking,as the manual leaves a lot to be desired.
Having done all this I can ping both local and web based addresses with no problem, search local files and folders but only connect via IE or Opera to a website typing the IP address i.e. 216.167.96.118 opens sygates site but typing http://www.sygate.com giver the unable to communicate etc screen.
i`m sure its something simple to do with one of these DNS,NAT things that are confusing me to bordom, anybody please help me before I have to turn all my favorites to numbers to achieve connection.

If your address is statically assigned, I would think you have to configure your router with your ISP's DNS servers when you configure it with your static address. I'm not familiar with that router, but I know Linksys and D-Links work that way with PPPoE.

hi ,thanks for the reply but unfortunatly I already assigned the DNS server or should I say set it to "assigned by ISP" as per the IP and Subnet mask.Looks like I`ll have to do a bit more online reading and tweak of the settings some more

Specify the DNS servers in the TCP/IP network settings of the PC from which you're trying to view web pages on.

Also on my setup with a Linksys box, you can tell the box to be a Router or Gateway. I have mine set as a Gateway, and the LAN IP Address (e.g. 192.168.1.1) is set as the Default Gateway in the PC's Network Settings.

Hope that Helps

Now this is weird.....
Having tried all resonable settings I finally got peed off with it and reset it to the manufacturers defaults, emailed dabs for a returns number then had second thoughts and decided to have one last stab before I binned the idea all together.Resetting it exactly the same as before the B*****Y thing worked ,you could have blown me down with a feather!
Now I just have to figure out if it was me or the router that was at fault
Thanks for the responses peeps nice to know theres help at hand if you need it
