Setting up an Intranet without MS Exchange Serve

I have a stand alone W98 System with a backup device that I use for network backup. 8 machines are connected and all use Outlook 97 with modems for internet access.

Is there any way I can use the stand alone system with Outlook 97 to set up a simple intranet (sending messages to the users of the network) without using MS Exchange Server.

It would be great to send information across the network as the machines are spread across three floors.

If I'm not explaining myself properly please tell me.

If you just want a simple mail server, that can handle email to/from a few users, all you need is SMTP (to relay mail) and POP3 (to access mail).

There are plenty of small free SMTP/POP3 servers around that will run on Win98:

• Mercur SMTP/POP3 Server
• ArGoSoft Mail Server
• CSM Mail Server
• 
  Internet Anywhere Mail Server

(all found on ZDNet Downloads searching for smtp pop3 server)

How about good ol Microsoft mail? Just setup a postoffice on your machine with the tape drive and have everyone access that?

pretzelboy - This sounds intersting but for a novice could you expand on that thought about Microsoft Mail and a post Office!

First, make sure Microsoft mail is installed. If it isn't, then you can find it as an add in on the Win98 cd. When it is installed, go to the control panel and select Microsoft Mail Postoffice. Follow the onscreen prompts and create the postoffice where everyone on the network can access it. Then add the users you want. Finally, on all the workstations add "Microsoft Mail" to the mail settings (You may need to change Outlook to a corporate version instead of internet only), configure it to see the postoffice, and you're done.
