[RESOLVED] DUN Win98 to server setup, connects but can't share files.
Hi, I'm running a Windows 2000 Advanced Server in the office and have Active Directory setup. I am connecting a computer from home (to backup date) to the server through dial-up networking. On the server I have setup routing and remote access, and setup the user name and password for the dialup computer, and allowed dialup permissions. And on the dialup computer I setup the DUN to connect to the server. The system dials and connects to the server and logs on to the network, but the problem is the <dialup> computer doesn't show up on the work network and the server doesn't show up on the dialup computer, so I can't transfer files. I can ping the server by IP address, and it works, but I can't seem to share any files from the server with the dialup computer. I'm sharing the files on an NTFS partition on the server, with dialin user permissions setup. I have tried to work with VPN, but everytime i dial to the server and try to use VPN it gives me an error message saying Dial Up networking is in use... Anyone have experience with this? Would appreciate the help a lot, Thanks
Arthur

right click on the DUN connection under Dial-up-networking and click on properties.
Make sure that " Log on to Network" is checked off. If this is not set it may look as if you are logging on when in fact you are not ( at least not with the proper user priviliges)
Also disable any protocols that are not necessary, IPX...etc. This will speed up the connection time.

ok now that our internet connection is back online let me clarify something.
When I said make sure "log on to network" is checked off I really meant make sure it is enabled.

I have a similar problem, when I connect through a VPN I connect, but when I try to access a share I get a IPC$ password box. How can I connect to my file server remotely without getting this box. I need to access my shares?? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi There,
given that you can ping the server, would suggest that a connection has been made successfully.
when try to map a drive are you using an IP address followed by a share name
\\192.168.32.1\sharename
or are you using the mnachinename followed by the share name
\\server\share
If the IP address works you will need a Lmmosts file in the \\windows\system folder of the remote PC.
Reboot and then try again.
Hope this helps...

OK the problem was two fold.
1. You must setup VPN through control panel\add remove programs\windows setup\communication. If you set it up through Network Neighborhood it wont work. Also make sure in the network properties that the second VPN adapter (#2) is present. Also add netbeui and setup the workgroup for the domain you are connecting too.
2. LMHOST and not LMHOST.sam. Make sure when you setup the LMHOST file the you check to make sure the extention is not there ie lmhost.sam (Wrong) lmhost (right). And if your like me and you forgot how to setup the LMHOST file remember
209.1.3.87 server_name #PRE #DOM OMAIN
209.1.3.87 "DOMAIN \0x1B"
12345678901234567890
I use the numbers below the doamin in quotes to make sure the is 20 spaces between the quotes (THERE MUST BE @) SPACE, DON'T ASK ME WHY??? I JUST KNOW THERE NEEDS TO BE 20. Once your sure of the spaceing kill the numbers under the domain in quotes.
Thank you all for your help I hope this will help someone else next time. If you have any questions just ask.
