Cat5 jacks

I have done a little network cabling. I have used Leviton jacks and Panduit. It seemed to me that the Leviton stuff was easier to work with. A friend who does a lot of cabling swears by Panduit.

I'm considering wiring my house soon. Anyone have any advice on home wiring jobs? What are the best jacks?

I just use whatever the supplier has in [fishes in the bag] errr, this one's got no name on, this one's an AMP...

I just look on them as a generic product, I reckon they're all the same at the end of the day.

Well sonuvagun!! Someone does use Panduit products! I'm the network admin for the Panduit division that makes those jacks her in Orland Park, Illinois... I haven't used any other company's product, but I can say that the CAT6 jacks that we produce are MUCH nicer to work with than the CAT5 ones we made in the past. The CAT6 jacks have the grey housing that you feed the cable into and pull each wire into it's own channel (kind of like a punch down method) until it is clipped in by mating the jack part to the grey housing. It's a really nice setup.

my advise 2 u would be 2 mount the wiring to the walls in the panels...though a LITTLE more expensive i believe it saves hastle (ie. avoiding planned power shutoffs and live wires)

unless of course it "needs more voltage" as was mentioned in this thread...

Never used the Panduits. Need to find some, though. They look like a breeze compared to what I've been using.

I don't suppose any of you know of a supplier in central TX?

RAD!!! This is the first time I've ever heard of someone getting ready to do "Structured Wiring" in their home. WTG man!! I wish I had my own house so that I do all that. Btw,.. We carry Leviton products at Home Depot. I just had an 8 hour seminar on all this crap earlier this week. If you have ANY questions about Leviton products, I'd be happy to try and answer them for ya. As far as comparing them to another vendor,.. I couldn't answer that though.

Patch panel for this room (my office) is in the cupboard, then it runs up to the hub in the loft, where the other points come through

Either company will work IMHO. I use normally whatever I can get for free or at a discount. When I did half of my house, home office and the racks. I used lots of them I went through the home depot route on buying just because they were local and half way through switched to buying off of ebay. If you arent picky on what you get look for a 96 port patch panel on ebay with jacks. Then to be black and take out all the jacks. If it came from a decent datacenter it should have only been punched once to a few times.

Hey WebHawg, I have been seeing "Keystone". I'm probably showing my ignorance, but I don't know what this refers to. I thought it was some type of standard for jacks and faceplates that Leviton was a part of. Is this the case? I am going to use Leviton. Home Depot's 10 packs are not a bad deal.

Down the road as money allows I would like to setup a ethernet camera on my front door with a motion sensor that will email me a pic of someone knocking. Does anyone have any experiance with this stuff?

<hr /></blockquote>Cool,.. that camera thing sounds great. Do you have a service panel setup for all your coax, s-vid, cat5, etc.? Btw, I haven't heard of Keystone, but I'll look into it. And yeah, the Home Depot Leviton products are pretty good right now (still doesn't beat the local comp store, but not bad still.) I can't wait until Leviton starts stocking our shelves with all the good stuff. Should be soon I hope. I saw some Leviton router/switches on a pallet the other day, so it should be soon for all that stuff to get on the shelves. Good luck with the camera.
