Arrow Ever have a user that was intent on sabotage?

Have you ever had a user that you knew was going to try some computer sabotage? Or have you ever had to recover a system from that?

    No.

But we did have to replace PC parts, monitors, etc. for the Emergency reception area in the hospital where I previously worked when "patients" got "impatient"

Had one rogue network admin in our company who didn't like the way our branch office drew AutoCAD drawings. So he sabotaged one of our LISP routines that did something he didn't agree with. Stupid moron left a trail of FTP logs with his IP! Unfortunately management has done nothing about it, and I hope it doesn't happen again.

I see it all the time.

A phone has the dataport all corroded out. There is really only one thing that can cause that. Water.
When you say that, they get really defensive BUT ITS NEVER BEEN NEAR WATER! (FYI Out store is less than a mile from the coast).

People don't realize it but we can tell exactly what has happened to a phone and why.

Huge dents on the phone "But I never dropped it!".

Its fun to see what people do to their phones just to get it replaced.

We had a few systems come in for insurance.. moving company. Guy claimed the company fubared his computer.. turned out the the GPU chip was pulled out of the video card.

Now on the other hand, we had what was called Death Row. Parts that where awaiting death so that RMA could be done.

Yea, I've seen users that wanted new computers so bad, they'd start by complaining daily, then start with the weirdest error messages imaginable. Messages that couldn't be duplicated. Then all the sudden, files would be deleted, and hardware would start to fry. I even had one person who said some of their keys were stolen, cause they wanted a new keyboard....

I have a story thats not exactly the same, but along those lines...

Awhile ago I had a friend who was become more and more reclusive. Between college courses and work he was next to impossible to get ahold of. Anyway, to make a long story (and it really is a LONG Story) Short, I had some inside help, and got into his room and planted a... 'bug' in his computer. Basicly, I had it set up to where the next time he booted up, everything would run fine. every time after that, it would fail to boot up. I had left a message on his desktop telling him I'd stopped by his house, and that he should call me. obviousely, he knew I fixed computers. And believe it or not, it worked! I got a call from him not 2 days later

I've also had customers who intentionally screw up their computers and try to get either warranty work done on them, or a replacement altogether... but thats another story entirely

ROFL! That is the first time I have heard of that.

To get a new keyboard, one of our users bent and twisted the cable until the keyboard was unusable.
