What is the best compression program?

I've been a loyal WinRar user for about 2 years.... A friend of mine recently turned me on to WinAce. I've tried WinAce in the past and thought it was a lil bloated. To much glamor and usless fancy toys. However, the new version WinAce 2.02 has the best compression ratio on the market. I still have WinRar installed but will soon get rid of it. WinAce is nice lil prog but I wish they would tone down the glittery glamor of friendlyness.

I sure hope know one is using WinZip... because they have the worst compression ratio.

Yeah, but not for the quality. The reason I use it is because most people have it, and it saves me from having to explain to my non-tech email recipients how to install and use another program. Usually the only thing I use it for is sending piddly stuff via email.

Well I'm using WinZip since 99% of the files out there are compressed using it. Plus my clients use ZIP format to send me files, and they're already computer newbies as it is (oh no, not another virus warning via email)

I could see the other archiving algorithms as useful, if you were say, a software pirate, but we all know that nobody here is into that kind of stuff. <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

You can use any zip application with zip files. You can create a zip file with Winzip and then open it with WinRar. Back and forth too...

Yeah, Ace rocks, but nobody uses it (well apart from a lot of people who seem to spell things with z at the end of everything).

Also, what was used to formulate the compression ration for the tests? Was it .txt files or something else? I zip up a lot of .jpg files for transfer and I can tell ya that most compression programs don't do squat for me. I mainly use them to organize multiple files for transfer over the net so WinZip rules since most people have it and/or can understand how to use it.

Hmm...u convinced me...iu have winace and winzip on my system all the time...i just use winzip a lot cos its easier...but im using winace from now on...

hmm well yeah you may be corect but I'm more interested in what I'm downloading not really the compression, I've never benchmarked my compression software before, didn't even think ya could. but though Ioccasionally use winACE WinRAR is more common and winzip is a fast easy utility for small files and everybody pretty much know's what it is. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
