Film Reviews from Mr Cabbage
Well, what with having a few spare evenings lately, Ive been seeing a few more films.
The most recent of which being Harry Potter, and The Last Castle.
'The Last Castle', although very, very cliche`, was still quite an enjoyable romp. The choice of Robert Redford for the role of the vigilante prisoner does take a bit of faith to believe, but the fat guy from 'The Sopranos' makes a great bad guy. The rest of the cast, are a thrown together band of men, obviously carefully chosen to reflect every stereotype in the book. Again, I still enjoyed this movie, but this could have been attributed more to the choc-mint icecream I was eating at the time.
Now, Lets talk about Harry Potter. I would rather not, but Im going to anyway.
This film was an absolute abortion. A strong testiment, to exactly why childrens books should stay just that. Childrens, and Books.
Having a taste a little more refined than the books require, I couldnt bring myself to read any of them, so being very new to this Harry Potter 'universe' I attempted to sit through the film, with as open a mind as I have.
Perhaps I failed.
I fail to see where the special effects budget was spent. Seven minutes of poorly rendered CG surely cant be all they could muster? The CG sequences and live action didnt so much as blend together, as fight each other for pieces of the screen. This isnt the way things should be done. The constant poking from my girlfriend throughout the film, was the only thing keeping me from dozing off Im afraid.
Anyone elses thoughts?.. answers on the back of a postcard, to the usual address.

It costs $10 to go see a movie in Toronto, which is a complete rip-off considering:
- They charge you exorbitant prices for fountain pop and popcorn (both of which cost next to nothing to make)
- they didn't make enough on you from the box office or concession stand, so they also have to advertise to you before the start of the actual film.
- some of the rubbish they project on the screen isn't worth $10
- you used to be able to go see the same movie downtown for $2 at the Eaton Centre, the worlds first multiplex (which has recently closed down)
- you can wait six months and rent the movie for a week for the same price as one ticket to a movie theatre
- if you watch it on video at home, you can fast forward through the useless trailers and intro, and pause it at anytime and use the john
Most of the small theatres in Toronto are gone, they have been consolidated into huge multiplexes (one has 30 screens!) now because of the large ticket prices they need to pay for all this, they are starting to suffer. And the crummy movies don't help, either.

Perhaps you'd like to check out Filthy Critic, for a completely diffrent take on movie reviews. Try Josie and the Pussycats for a good laugh. Raunchy and tasteless - be forewarned. I won't link to it here, but The Grinch is a particularly vulgar review.
I've even used the site to validate whether or not to see a movie, even though it's more of a humoristic site.
And don't even get me started on movie theater pricing!
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. -Douglas Adams

One theater in the city I live in has a $2 movie theater that shows older movies that aren't on vhs/dvd yet. Popcorn and cokes still cost an arm and a leg though.

Yeah, it's even a bit more here. About $7 is what we pay in my neck of the woods. Ridiculous. I only go to matinees or theaters where I can get a student discout (matinee price).
