[RESOLVED] The American Flag

I am thrilled that everyone is now showing such amazing patriotism by flying our flag high and proud, but it amazes me that no one knows how to care for them!

There are laws on how to care for flags...two of the biggest that people constantly break are: ALWAYS take the flag down during bad weather (including rain), and don't leave it out over night...and sense we are no longer officially in a state of morning, it should currently be taken down after sunset and risen at dawn *just like we are no longer flying it at half staff*

*also on a side note...don't buy American flags that were made in another country. Nothing ticks me off more than seeing an American flag that says "Made in Brazil" on it!*

I've been commenting a lot about all these "patriots" who defame the flag by flying it improperly. Glad to see I'm not the only one who's thought of this....

While it is unfortunate that they are not flying the flag in the proper manor, at least they are attempting to show there patriotism, so I will not bash them!

If you have a weather resistant flag you can keep it up during inclement weather. You can keep it up at night if you have it illuminated properly.

Another thing: If your flag is frayed or damaged you should take it down, not leave it out.

Seeing that I was in the military I spent countless hours on proper procedure for taking Old Glory up and down a flagpole. We had it drummed into our head how to show respect for the flag that many people died to defend. It's unfortunate that so many people are ignorant of how to properly display the flag but I doubt they are purposely doing it wrong.

Ok widget, it doesn't matter if the flag is weather resistant, its not about that, it has to do the fact that you care for the flag, and don't let anything harm it. You are right though about leaving it up at night, that’s ok, only if you have a light on it.(all of this was drilled into me by ericabob ) bad_mojo and fub, yes, they are trying, but to those people that know the proper way to display a flag, its almost like an insult. ---"While it is unfortunate that they are not flying the flag in the proper manor, at least they are attempting to show there patriotism, so I will not bash them!"---That attitude might be ok with other scenarios like a father helping a son do his homework, when he has no idea how to do geometry, but when you are dealing with your own country that thousands of people died so that you could hang that flag correctly, it’s not ok.

As long as the flag isn't being displayed upside down, I don't mind! That happened in Atlanta during the World Series between the Jays and Braves.

Actually, there is a factory in Barrie Ontario that is supposedly the largest producer of American flags in the world. Hows that for free-trade?

You are all entitled to your opinions. Mine is simply that if you are going to do it, do it right or don't do it at all. It's just like everything in life. I know it is good that people are trying. I just think that it is pitiful that American's don't know how to care for their countries flag! There are actual laws about it. I know I'm just ranting and raving, but it really upsets me.

Another excellent site is http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html . Also I would like to take the time to say that the flag should be displayed with honor and respect. As a side note the rules and regulations for the the displaying of the flag are codified and executive decree, but are custom and guidance codifications. Put another way the U.S. Flag Bureau will not be banging on your door issuing a citation.
That being said take care of your flag and take the time to educate others. During this time I have taught the neighborhood children about "Old Glory" the care, history and respect of the flag. Now every morning and evening I have several youngsters at my house wanting to help raise, lower and fold the flag. As a matter of fact one young lady and one young man have volunteered to help Mrs. Pak with the flag while I am on a business trip the last week of October. Why is that important? Well the Mrs. has MS and sometimes...well sometimes she appreciates the help of others. I am proud to call these children (and their parents) neighbors.
