    Beat me to it

Holodecks would probably be a logical extension of where gaming is going.

Realism in games is highly sought after (3D, lighting effects, game physics, sound immersion, etc) and so I predict that games would most likely be the one field in IT which could propel hologram technology forward.

    Talking

I hate to mention it, but holodecks would cause the fall of whatever civilization has them. I'll leave its less than uh family oriented uses to the imgination.

    Fred: have you seen Frank?
Jack: he died yesterday, in the holodeck due to extreme exhaustion and...dehydration
    Fred: dibs on his holodeck!
Jack: can I have a turn, I mean after you die and its been mopped out?
    Fred: rock on!

Thus all males with a libido would die off of "exhaustion" and "dehydration", and a percentage of the women too...and the world might end up being a touch more..tranquil....hmmmm

Sounds like the video they used in Futurama on why humans shouldn't date Robots and how it could lead to the end of mankind.
