I think I am missing something here. What picture are you referring to? There are 9+ news stories on this page, none with pictures.

    Question

    I am a dolt!!!!!

I was refering to this article

The Taliban Were Horrified, We're Sure

Pentagon officials were forced to apologize last week following complaints about the language scribbled on the front of an Afghanistan-bound bomb aboard a U.S. carrier in the Asian theater, reports the AP.

The Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights group, complained about the message after a photograph distributed by the AP showed a Navy officer aboard the flight deck of the U.S.S. Enterprise standing next to a bomb displaying what was described as a gay slur by the group.

The words "High Jack This," followed by the slur, were visible in the photograph.

Rear Adm. Stephen Pietropaoli called the language an "isolated incident" in a letter to the Human Rights Campaign and reiterated that the Navy does not tolerate discrimination.

"We immediately notified Navy commanders involved with Operation Enduring Freedom to ensure steps were taken to prevent a recurrence of this unfortunate incident. They have done so," Pietropaoli wrote.

That was quite anti-climatic. I have talked with several gays and they do not find that word offensive.

Well, I have a couple of downstairs neighbors who would disagree with your "several gays". It's about respecting people for what and how they are. Now personally someone could come up to me and call me whitey whitey fatboy fatty fat all day and it probably wouldn't get on my nerves too much but some poeple are more sensitive than me (well most people are really). The reason that some people don't like being called names should be obvious to you. It seems that it's alright to rip on one group of people but not another and personally I understand completely why some people get upset about silly things when they have been subjected to a particular form of harassment for a long period of time.

So let me get this right, We can bomb Osama, we just cant call him names!?!?!?! I say this Pilot is putting his life on the line to drop that bomb, let him write whatever personal message he wants to on the thing. Now it shouldnt have been broadcast for all to see, but I fault the Media for that not the Navy.

    Angry

ilovetheusers, I am only seventeen, and if I can figure out that one word may offend one person and it may not even slightly effect another person, then you should be able to as well.

I think that if you are offended by the word "fag", then you just need to turn your cheek to it. You sound really uptight tight about the whole thing.

Pakprotector had a very valid point. In England, they use the word fag in reference to a cigarette.

Oh, and did you know that the proper definition of fag is: (A) A student at a British public school who is required to perform menial tasks for a student in a higher class, or (B) a drudge, which is a person who does tedious, menial, or unpleasant work.
    *This is according to dictionary.com*

Besides, even if he did mean it as the slang term, you need to get over it. There isn’t anything that you can do about it now, and last time I checked we had the freedom of speech and like cc_penuin said, he’s risking his life to drop that bomb, he is allowed to write whatever he wants on it, including American slurs.
    THIS TOO SHALL PASS!

Great photo!! worth the price of admission around here. But I would not read too much in to the word. It is ment for the terrorists and not ment to shock or offend us.

Note: Racial, Ethic, or Minority slurs are never appropriate. Period. Even if the term used on the bomb were not offensive to anyone who is actually gay, there would still be the insult that somehow gays are to be compared to Bin Laden and therefore evil just because of who they are. Imagine any other slur being written on that bomb and see what kind of outcry you would get--like the "n" word. This is not o.k. just because the gay community has a small enough voice to be ignored on this one. Insult the terrorists but leave others out.
