Unhappy I'm just gonna go outside and kill myself

This is what a customer actually said to me today.

    (BTW, she's a teacher.)

Luckly she didn't, since I was laughing my @$$ off after I got off the phone with them.

This lady's drive died a horrible noisy death the other day. System can't detect it 9 times out of 10, and the one time it actually does, it starts to load NT4 and then *tick, tick, tick, boingggg, klunk* no more boot.

When I told the lady that I can't save her drive, she nearly broke down. Seems she has about 2 years worth of her life on the drive including tests, students projects, school board info and her schools web site (only the work in progress) with no backups at all.

So guess who's sending their drive to a data recovery center and are going to shell out around $3500 to retrieve data they could have saved on cdr or cdrw...

Looks like that HDD might be going in the freezer for a little while..

    Backup? Whats that?

    (And yes, I've been through 2 serious crashes that couldn't be recovered)... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

That's the best way to convert people to making backups for life...

Wail, Great gnashing of teeth... did you try the freeze the drive in a baggy trick?

$3500 wow... I cannot believe she was that um... well DUMB!

Well yes I can... never ceases to amaze me how much value some people put on their data, yet they are not willing to spend a little time looking after it.

Well at least she has learned her lesson and perhaps others (her students, etc) will learn from her mistake.

What is this thing you mention - "backup"?

Is that when the information inside the computer gets too big and spills out onto the TV thing?

Actually, most people in the education field are really this PC-illiterate. Most educators hate technology and they are usually liberal so they REALLY HATE Bill Gates. That is why Mac's are so popular with schoolteachers, because they are made for dummies and that are anti-Microsoft. I have even known IT teachers on the undergrad level who had to bring their PCs to me because they did something to muck up their system and they didn't have a clue what to do.

That is why I will take a MCSE or CCIE over a master's degree any day.
