Spin Speed or Size?
The price of a 60gb 5600 spin speed, is about the same as a 40gb 7200 spin speed. Which would be the most sensible buy?

if you have a "new" machine with a fast prossessor then a 5400 would slow you down, but if your machine is "elderly" and you need "lots" of space then go with it.
I recently upgraded from a 5400 to a 7200 maxtor udma133 ,,,,,,
I can tell you there WAS a difference in "my" case.
probly better to buy the 7200 ,,,,,as of yet I havnt even come close to filling 20-30g yet.
OH the days of running windows 3.11 on a 10meg h/d.

You need to be aware that depending on the age of your system, its possible that neither of those drives will be recognised by your BIOS anyway. You need to check with your mobo manufacturer to ensure that they'll either be recognised or that there's a BIOS flash upgrade available.

To get the full advantage out of either drive, you'll need an ATA100 controller card for the 5400RPM drive and an ATA133 controller card for the 7200RPM drive...

if you have a small case the 5400 might be the better way to go. the 7200 will add quite a bit more heat into the equation. an extra hd fan will help with that however.
