I really think the whole thing comes down to balance and the happy medium..
I fish ...I don't kiss it and send it back like good ole Rex Hunt does...which I do think is cruel, for the sake of good television and money...when I fish I take him home and eat him.....same as if I went hunting...

I hunt and fish, too. When I drop an elk, I don't think about the psychological trauma I've caused the beastie...rather, I look forward to the excellent food me and my family will enjoy now. F-O-O-D, that spells "dead animal"...yum...

I like how Mad Max (from the John Boy and Billy show, radio personality) puts is. "You're on the top of the food chain, get over it"

I've always wondered how distinctions of 'rights' and 'worthiness' are made. Most vegan's I've ever talked to said they would never eat animal products because it's wrong to take a life--even an animals...
O.K. Not a totally unreasonable premise but let's examine that a little closer...
Are not fruits, vegetables, and grains--the staples of vegan's--living breathing organs with circulatory systems as well? What about wood products? Do vegans shun paper and wooden houses? So where does one draw the line?
Personally, I will freely admit to being an omnivore but I try to maintain a respectfull awareness of what was sacrificed for my need. And I absolutely HATE throwing away spoiled wasted food.

I wonder what the PETA/ASPCA crown has to say about bomb-sniffing dogs that find explosives and keep them from blowing up airplanes and buildings?

and where is the line drawn........Do we judge a meat eating predator as being a bad animal for not eating fruit.......and yet we are judged by other humans for the same thing........are these individuals perfect and closer to the "GOD ASPECT" because of this ???
Do we sin by killing and eating meat.....
I don't think so or else God wouldn't have made steak knives to cut our meat........ </strong><hr></blockquote>
I agree with Mayet, and I have really sharp steak knives.

Great topic everybody! Let me add one more comment to the PETA debate. I am not a supporter of PETA, but I am in the Catch 22 position of having a son who is alive today because of the results of animal research conducted at the University of Virginia in the late 70's (Saul-Wilson Disease). I hate the conditions and treatment these animals recieve, but my special boy is with me today based on some of this type research. I have come to the conclusion that "Animal Research" for human suffering is tolerable, but Animal Research for cosmetics or other things is just plain cruel. A Fine Line well maybe, but not to me, because I have living proof sitting next to me right now.
I only post using 100% recycled electrons!!!
Stay on the bomb run, boys. I'm going to get them doors open if it hair lips everybody on Bear Creek.

I am reminded, by all this, of an article I read a few years ago about a group of PETA members who staged a sit in at a bull ring in Mexico. Seems they were so hell bent on Saving the bulls that they started their sit in in the middle of the first fight. A dozen or so of these tree hugging idiots jumped into the ring during the fight and just sat down in the middle of the ring. The bull, now with a choice of targets for his bad disposition, opted for the marks that weren't armed. The result, it was said, looked much like a popcorn popper in use.
Another PETA member stood in the middle of the street, quite bravely I might add, during the running of thee bulls in Spain. If only her body had been as strong as her resolve. a bull tosssed her around on the street for quite some time before anyone could help her. She nearly died, but swore from her hospital bed that she would gladly do it again.
This sort of imbecillic behavior does not give me cause to give that organization much heed. These people don't want to save those animals any more than I want to save the week old smoked turky that I just tossed in the trash. They simply want a "cause". Something to make them feel they are worth something. Something to bitch about.
The Dragon has left the building.

I'm by no means a PETA supporter as I eat meat that is hunted, I fish, and I have visited a Rodeo once or twice. There will always be differing opinions on a variety of subjects.
The human traits assigned to animals is one such subject. If the chimpanzee did not have a great ability to learn and did not know how to use tools, would the only thing akinning them to humans be thier genetic code?
Are humans really at the top of the food chain? Put a hungry human in a pool with an hungry Great White shark, and we'll surely find out.
What kind of guardians of the Earth are we that we kill off species after species of animal? There are many questions to be asked, and we'll never know all the answers to them. So, until the time when the human animal earns the right to be all high and mighty, why not say that all creatures on Earth are equal?
Nothing I wrote above was meant to offend ... honest. If I offended anyone, I appologize. It's just my .02

As a Yankee, I really don't like cowboys and rodeos, but I have no reason to protest against them.
PETA on the other hand... I allready went there, and I'd rather not go there again.
