Not reading cd's
In some ocassions when I insert any type of cd...data or music, windows xp does not read the cd. I go to My Computer and double click on the cd drive and a blank window appears and nothing happens. It does not recognize the cd. This happens with both my DVD and CD-RW drive. Its been happening since I upgraded from Me to XP. Then, when I restart the computer Windows Xp recognizes the cd's.

a little info on your system would be nice. specifically what motherboard you have. If it has a via chipset, have you install the latest via 4in1 drivers? Sometimes even a bios update will take care of many problems associated with the upgrade to xp.
give us some info, it makes it easier to know what to suggest.

there is a patch from MS that might fix this. Try Windows Update and HFNETCHK to get the patches

You can try banging your head against a wall attempting to find the exact cause of your problem, but a much more practical solution is to make sure that all the relevant components are up to date. As previously stated, these would include Windows XP (Windows Update), the IDE controller on your motherboard, and I'll add the firmware on your CD/DVD drives. Do all that and you should be sitting pretty.

Yep... I've seen quite a few read problems with CD/DVD drives and in almost every case updating the firmware was the solution.
It's amazing just how flaky these things can be too, in regards to system changes. I recently worked on one customers machine who wanted a MB/CPU/memory/OS(XP) upgrade. His DVD-ROM worked perfectly in the old configuration... no problems at all. I installed all the upgrades and POOF it couldn't read anything! I had to boot up XP from floppies because it couldn't even read the Windows install disk. I updated the firmware and now all is well again.

We had a PC in last week with the same or a very similar problem. The customer had a VIA based motherboard. Periodicly WinXP would find the customer CDROM and CDRW as new hardware. We updated it with the most recent 4-in-1 XP tested drivers from www.viahardware.com and it worked fine. Hope this helps.
