    Question XP can't see other machines

    Hello again,
    You should already know my network situation from my topic below . My other question is why can't my xp machine see any of the other machines on the network? When it is connected to the network it is unable to see my other machines and the other machines can't see it. I can ping the xp machine but I can't view shared files from it and it can't see shared files from my other machines that the winme machines can see between each other (if you still follow me ). I have file and printer sharing on all the computers (Netbeui on the winme machines) enabled. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

    Do not enable the guest account. Make sure ipx is installed (is not by default). That one tripped me up the first time tried to get 2 xp and a 98 machine talking on the home network.

    Also, are you using home or pro ed?

    Grab your XP CD and and go to the Valueadd\MSFT\NET\Netbeui folder , hers is the instructions for installing NETBEUI on your system

    NetBEUI (NBF) is a non-routable protocol suitable for small networks.
    Support for this protocol in Microsoft Windows has been discontinued.
    If you are instructed by the Product Support Personnel to install this protocol
    as a temporary measure, follow the instructions below.

    Installation instructions for NetBEUI protocol on Windows XP and Windows 2002.

    * copy nbf.sys into the %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ directory
    * copy netnbf.inf into the %SYSTEMROOT%\INF\ directory
    * open network connection properties and use "Install..." button to add NetBEUI protocol

    After this your machine should see each other, My system is on the mshome workgroup and my Dad's is still on the workgroup settings and I was still able to see my dad's computer from mine , SO it looks like workgroups don't really matter but they should be the same
    Format c I'm givin er all she's got cap'in !!! )

    From lurking on the microsoft networking groups, it's apparent that adding an XP machine to an existing network can be tricky. Steve Winograd has an article at <a href="http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/addxp.htm" target="_blank">http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/addxp.htm</a> with his solutions.

    I don't like allowing anyone to access my computer without knowing who it is or giving them permission to access it.

    I personally have never seen a guest account enabled, and have never used it myself. Nor would I suggest to use it, unless troubleshooting permissions was your mission, and you intended to reverse the change following testing. It is an opportunity asking for trouble in some way...therefore I agree.

    I disagree with the use of NetBEUI. TCP/IP only, with little effort, should provide all of the networking that you need. NetBEUI should only be used if you need to test that the network hardware is working. And unless a specific Net game requires IPX/SPX, or you function with Netware, you don't need it either.
