Copy and Restore Saved Email Folders to XP

I have two computers in my home network and I am about to format the hard drives in both and swap them out as I would like to have the larger drive in the unit with the fastest CPU.

My problem is with getting my folders I have created in Outlook Express running in Windows 98 exported into the XP Professional version I will be installing. For example: I have created around 10 folders beneath the “Sent” and “Deleted” folders within Outlook Express 6.0 in Windows 98. In the past whenever I have formatted/reinstalled, I have simply copied the Outlook folder contained in C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook to a CDRW and restored. But, I have tried today to simply copy one of these folders with about 1MB of saved emails to floppy and then restore to a unit running XP Professional unsuccessfully. I created a “test” folder in Outlook Express 6.0 under its “Sent” etc. folders, found the path to the folder I had just created, and copied the folder from the floppy to the location of the “test” folder. But, the folder does not show up in Outlook Express.

I have considered simply formatting both units, installing Windows 98, restoring the folders from backup to Outlook Express, and then upgrading BUT I would rather perform a clean install. These computers will be networked and both will run a triple boot of XP Professional, Windows 2000 Pro, and Windows 2000 Server.

Any ideas on copying the folders containing saved emails to the new installation on XP Pro? Or, would it just be easier to upgrade to XP Pro after installing Windows 98 and restoring from backup?

OK two things

Clean install is always better than upgrade - dual boot is another option you could consider.

As for the outlook express - I change my store folder to a sensible folder name and path, then I burn that entire folder to cd.

When I restore, I import, and check the radio button from import from a oe store directory.

I have never had a problem providing that the outlook express version is the same or higher than the version you were using.

Thanks-I'll try that. I have plans not to dual boot but to triple boot. But, Windows 98 is not one of the Operating Systems I plan to use.
