Angry A new Microsoft marketing gimick ?

I was shocked, to say the least with this:

I was on Netmeeting with my sister
(I'm using a Win2k portable and she is under ME)
A third friend wanted to join the chat with is
    brand new XP pc.

Now keep in mind we have chatted numerous times this way with up to 7 peoples at once.
As soon as this guy tries to connect, we both
    received this message in MSN:

You need Windows XP to perform this function.

    WTF?

This guy is trying to reconnect with all is friends and they all reported the same message.

So we need ALL to upgrade ?

    Thanks, Micro$haft.

That could be, you were using netmeeting, and the friend was using MSN, if you are all using the same program I wouldn't think that you would have that big of a problem.

Nope, you start Netmeeting by MSN (and using hotmail as server)
As I mentionned, the only one that cannot connect to us was the XP, sending that message on the msn channel.

Hmmm... I video conference with my kids twice a week using NetMeeting. I'm on XP and they're usinf WinME. There have not been any problems to date. The only time I've seen a mesage like that is when you attempt to video conference using XP's Windows Messenger. In that case the recipient has to be running XP as well.

I'm not doubting you, I'm merely saying that if that's truly the case I don't think that's normal behavior.

The solution to this problem is to run the old version of Netmeeting on the XP machine. It's buried somewhere in the directory tree, the filename is CONF.EXE. Run that instead and you should be able to connect.
