Floppy drive

Anyone know how to stop XP seeking the floppy drive?

It seems everything I do starts it off. If I open IE it tries to read from it. If I start any software it tries to read from it. If I scratch my head it tries to read from it .

Every XP machine I come across does this!

Pleaaaaase, anyone found the cause of this???

Every XP machine?

I would start with looking at what software each system has installed that is the same. Try uninstalling it on one of the machines(all though this might not have any effect if it leaves the "damage"). If you have the time and a machine that is not in use I would try installing XP and then installing all the updates. After that load each program to your specs but one at a time and reboot and see if it set's off the floppy. If not on to the next program. Keep doing this till you either find the software (or hardware driver) that is causing this and go from there. This is how I would trouble shoot this.

You have`nt been reading/writing stuff to/from floppy have you i.e favorites and they`re still shown in the documents folder on start menu ?

Gollo, I think I may be leaning towards your suggestion, all these machines have similar software, but the hardware is different in most cases, I think I will have to do what you say when I get some spare time.

Archer, thanks for the advice, but on my own machine, the floppy was only used to install xp and has never been used since, not sure about the others though. Thinking about it, I could even diconnect the blasted thing till I need it again!

Virus software could be scanning the drive. Just a thought...

That had crossed my mind, but some of these machines have no a/v software on

The problem seems worse on my machine, otherwise I would have given up ages ago.

Anyway, the weekends coming, I'll try a clean install on mine and work from there I think.
