Hi again Freddy. I was backing up 2.45gb of data. I have deleted some of my progams then used my 3 discs to restore, and the programs were back in again, so that looks OK. I then tried creating some more discs by using the compressing method. This took 2 Discs, and I opted to make the discs bootable, but when I tried restoring them I got error messages and a sign saying it could not read the file. Again they wouldn't boot. So that was no good. I still think it has something to do with NTFS. I think that Drive Image has got around the NTFS problems OK but it is quite expensive, compared to Ghost, and the trial download is about 20mb, much too big for my dial up connection. Thanks again for your help.

you are winning , good .

what are u using to make bootable?

as i said i was,nt using ntfs (xp) ,,,i do know that if i re do my 2k - which is now ntfs , it looks at a non exist drive ?

make a win98 bootable disk and cut it down (as shown above and add d:\ghostXX in autoexec if u want (im not sure how) but i shold be able to send u a image of my floppy boot , which u can expand to a floppy and use as your boot files ,

    if u need u can e-mail me

The floppy discs that I made with Ghost are bootable. It asked me if I wanted to make the CDs that I made bootable and I chose yes, but they don't boot. The only way to restore NTFS files, as far as I can see, is to boot to the floppy. Choose Disk from image, point to the CD in the Rom Drive, it then makes you insert the Licence Number, so it is as well to make a copy of that so you have it ready. And it copies from the CDs to the hard drive asking for the second and third CDs when needed. So that seems to work fine. I couldn't see any way to select files so I just had to back up all my Hard Drive. I am going to experiment a bit more to see if I can just back up my operating system with all the updates on it. I don't mind installing my software as I have all my CDs, but I am not sure how I am going to format my Drive except by using the XP disc.

    good luch freddy

That's interesting about not needing to format when using a Ghost image. I hadn't realised that. I did use Fat when I was using Win 98SE, but since going over to XP I decided to use NTFS. I have to say that XP is very stable and I much prefer it to Win98. Thanks for your help on this topic. Best Wishes

I have my drive partitioned so that c is only about 3.5 gigs and all the programs get redirected to d drive. That way you can format and reformat and image and reimage your os until you get bored without having to mess with your progs (except the ones that need to be reinstalled to work) and needing so many discs.
