    Thumbs up MSN Messenger Removal in XP - How to do it

    Edit \winnt\inf\sysoc.inf (you might want to back it up first).

    Change the line:
    msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
    To:
    msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

    Then Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs
    Add/Remove Windows Components (Left Hand Side of screen)
    Windows Messenger will be then on the list of optional components.

    You can do this to any of the other lines with 'hide' in them if you wish to remove them as well.

    This does work as I have doen this myself to remove a load of the other 'junk' XP installs as default.

    wow thanks man. That thing is such a bitch.

    any info on removing Windows Media Player 8 or at least disabling it so that it can't automatically reassociate itself with all your media files?

    WMP8 & file types.

    Open WMP8 - Tools - Options - File Types and simply uncheck the ones that you don't want WMP8 to be associatred with. I only use WMP8 for WMA, WMX & WMV files, the rest are automatically assigned to the other apps in this way.
