    Post Loving WinXP

I just loaded WinXP last night and WOW....it works like a champ. I could not believe the load time on the OS or the programs....shutdown time is very minimal too. Besides deleting all of the remote access items (accounts, services, etc.) is there any other oddities/changes that anyone has found.

    Thanks,
    Raven

hi, i have been running XP for about 2 weeks now, well i did say about,
yes it is really really fast but i do miss Open GL
and the fact that when i install new hardware my sound seems to get cocked up
but aside from that it runs like a charm,
which reminds me, must fix that darn sound tonight

i had a nightmare start with XP Pro, i already had 98SE on one HD, formatted my 2nd HD to accomodate XP from within 98SE, and problems began. what i had actually done was do a "quick" format from within 98SE and not a full format on my 2nd drive.

that said, after a very shaky start, and numerous installs, XP is now working like a charm, and has yet to crash, BSOD etc. the only piece of software that gave an error (once) was Eudora 5.1.

so far no issues here yet....i kinda like media player 8....really nicely done!!

i dont like the idea of all of the remote stuff they jammed into it...remote help accounts, remote registry services, etc. but they at least still allowed us to either disable or delete these options

For my personal machine, so far so good. Very painless install (a surprise, really), and drivers for all of my parts (even my old HP 680C printer had drivers with maintenance routines built it). I've been loading my programs up one at a time and testing each one of them, they all work great!

I do miss OpenGL support (I rather play Half-Life in OpenGL then D3D) but I'm running an ATI Rage Fury and I can wait for ATI to release new drivers in a week or so.

At the computer shop I work at, I found a problem with ICQ running on a machine with multiple users (see http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum1/ubbcount.cgi?expath1 =Forum38&expath2=&topic=000107&type=&number=38 for info) - while it isn't anything really bad, I'll wait until that's figured out before I config more then one user on my machine.

While people were playing around with the beta, I read the reports and was a bit sceptical about MickySoft's claims regarding WinXP being stable out of the packaging. Now, after playing with it at work and at home I have to admit it's not that bad. Think I'll quit now before I get called a MS groupie

i agree about the driver support - it found all of my drivers without a hitch

i agree about the openGL issue, but just give it some time before the manufacturers produce them

i hate microsoft, but so far to my eyes...they havent done half bad with this one

I like XP - but will wait for a little more driver support before I do a permanent upgrade. Basically I was running 98SE for about 2 years (with no rebuilds) then upgraded to 2k pro, then a week later, upgraded to XPp pro. No problems whatsoever. Sure, I had to get a new version of zonealarm and my print drivers, but asid from that, it was smooth, slick and effective. It ran fairly well on a p3 450 / 128 too which I was quite surprised at - I was expecting it to be total bloatware (it stil is in a way) which needed a 1.4GHz / 1gig ram and an ultra160 drive to run at minimum spec!

I'm running it on my IBM 600 (PII 266, 192mb 4.0gb) And it runs ok, but a little pokey at times. But faster than I thought it would run.
