Do you get the same problem logged in as administrator, or in safe mode?

Is the floppy write-protected? Some are from the box. Try moving the slide on the back upper left.............can't remember if up is locked or down.............

Check the BIOS F1 on start-up, IBM has a write or read in the bios for the floppy, the default is read only.

Make sure the "twisted" end or the cable is at the drive.
Does the light on the floppy stay on all the time?
Could be that the floppy controller has went south.......
Check for bent pins on the drive.
Can you boot from the floppy?

It sounds like the drive may have a write head prob. Are you able to write under other OS's?
Have you tried running the drive in another machine w/ XP?
Try looking at another 300gl w/ XP and replicate the FDD settings from the OS on the good machine.
Try removing the FDD from the DM and reboot. The OS should recognize the FDD and reinstall with default settings.

I replaced the drive with a new one.same thing..Ive uninstall and reinstalled the controller,I'm starting to get the feeling there is no security setting in xp that would cause this .everybody seems to think this is a hardware problem,I pesonally think its a software setting..but I'm new to XP...I've emailed ruslan and macgiver, and im really courious what they have to say on this subject,

Ok,well, the problem is solved..every body has been saying bios and hardware,I was sure it was a setting in XP.I been through the bios, and I also changed the floppy drive for the 3rd time, and even bought new floppies..but as I was emailing Ruslan,it dawned on me the IBM 300gl,has a rocker pannel with 8 dip switches mounted on the mother board..and sure enough #8 is a write protect switch,I was messing with these settings a couple of months ago and must of played with that setting,I switch the setting and all my problems with the Floppies have been solved. Thanks for everybody's input.....just goes to show you,if it looks like sh*t,smells like sh*t and taste like sh*t ..it must be sh*t....lol
