changed motherboard and CPU, now what?
Hi Folks
a bit of a dilema, I just changed my motherboard and CPU from Abit KT7 Raid w/1100 MHz CPU, to an Epox 8FTA3+ Raid and an Athlon 1800+ CPU now Windows XP won't boot. It locks up on the select screen where you select safe mode etc. When I click on any choice it locks up. Anyone else had to upgrade a motherboard yet? Help would be greatly appreciated. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

You should have uninstalled the old chipset drivers first, especially the IDE. Even if the drivers are the same for the new board, you will run into problems like this. Try placing the old parts back in and uninstalling the chipset & IDE drivers first.

yup, I figured that but in my infinite wisdom, I sold the old parts already and they are gone. Hind site is a fabulous gift we were given. There must be a way to get past this...the Epox board is so close to the Abit in chipset, ide and raid drivers. Funniest part is that I stuck in my backup Millenium HDD and it just automatically changed a few settings and away she goes. Unfortunately the software I need to run is on the XP hard drive

With ME & 9x you can get away with this, but with the NT Kernal it is not so easy. If there is away round it, I don't know it nor can find it online anywhere.

I see some other possible options but am pretty sure they are gonna fail
- boot from cd and re-install but there are the options of either deleting old windows files or using restore console, I go to restore console and I guess I just don't know what to do there.
-next, I can re-install on a fresh hard drive and then put in original HDD and pull in all the files and settings...don't know anyone who has tried that option yet. It is the file and settings wizard, or some such name like that.

Haven't needed to try this with XP yet but it's probably the same as W2K. Boot to the CD as if you were doing a new install. When it asks if you wish to repair or install, choose install. Next it should see the existing Windows and ask if you wish to replace/remove old Windows and install clean or repair the existing install. If you choose 'repair the existing install' it will go the installation process, redetecting your hardware and such but preserve the rest of your settings from the registry for apps, users, etc.

Has anyone tried deleteing the ENUM keys in the reg. like you can in win9x. (So the system will run a hardware redetect.) I haven't tried it yet, myself, I will tonight.

This was discussed here once before, NT doesn't have the Key in HKey_Local_Machine, and I don't recall anyone trying a variation to that fix. It probably only works in the 9x OS's. If you find anything tonight, let us know!

Found it the key is located @
hkey_local_machine\system\controlset001\enum
and
hkey_local_machine\system\controlset002\enum
I am guessing that the controlset002 is there for a docked laptop profile. I deleted them both.
It will give you and error that the key can't be deleted but it will delete the subkeys below it and that is what you want. The problem for Athlon Freak is that you can't boot to run regedit you may want to try booting to console from the install cd and see if it will let you delete the keys from the command line. To delete from the command line you would type regedit /d [name of the key]
Hope this helps...

thanks for all the help...so far it is all a no go. The regedit command is not available from the console. This is tough, I installed fresh on a new HDD and pulled over some of my settings from the old HDD, that was no easy chore either. Anyway, I appreciate the efforet.
