    Post Microsoft Outlook 2000

Hi all, I have a Dell inspiron 4000 here which is running Win2k, 128Mbram and a 3com dual nic/modem card. It also is running Office2k and using Microsoft Outlook. When it is connected to the net via the modem it can send/recive email no problem. When it is connected via the Lan it cannot find the POP3 server ie: mail.bigpond.com. Yet it can see the entire network and printers, connect to other pc's/servers and surf the web. The user has admin rights so I dont think it is a permissions problem and the mail connections are set to auto detect connection. Weird huh.
Any idears why it is doing this???

    Thanks in advance.

    Yoshie.

    i think its a config problem;

To make sure your LAN Internet connection is working properly, establish your Internet connection and ping a known Internet Protocol (IP) address by typing the following command at an MS-DOS prompt:
    ping <IP address>
where <IP address> is a known IP address.

If you can ping a known IP address successfully, basic TCP/IP connectivity is functioning properly. Next, try to ping the same server using "servername.com" instead of its IP address. At an MS-DOS prompt type the following command:
    ping servername.com
If this works, your Domain Name Server (DNS) settings are functioning properly.

A DNS server maintains a database for resolving host names and IP addresses, allowing users of computers configured to query the DNS to specify remote computers by friendly host names rather than IP addresses. DNS domains are not the same as Windows NT networking domains.

For example, issuing the "ping yahoo.com" command goes to the DNS server you specified for your internet connection, looks up the IP address for the site, and then pings that IP address

Most Internet addresses and connection settings are case sensitive. Check for correct capitalization.

Make sure your profile does not include multiple services that require a modem connection. For example, Internet and fax services in the same profile may cause modem conflicts within Outlook.

Establish your Internet connection, and then start Outlook. If you receive an error trying to send or receive mail, confirm all of your Internet Mail settings with your Internet service provider. You may have entered a domain name server or news server address instead of the mail server.

Remote Mail configurations may cause unexpected results. If you configured a service for Remote Mail, you may lose connections, or mail may not be sent or received as expected.

    hope this helps a bit! <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

    Thanks Mr Miyagi,
I did some testing and using the server name gets no result. using the IP address I can send and recive mail via the lan. I still cant see why I have no problems using the modem but encounter errors using the lan.

    Any other ideas?

    Yoshie.

my lan settings are different... have you tried going thru the internet connection wizard in IE...? this sets up everything; you just specify the pop a/c details etc.

    that may help!

Yep I have reinstalled the mail account already but I still get the same results. I think it has something to do with our server/router config seems that I can get mail no problem via the modem connection and only have problems with the network connection.

    Thanks again Mr Miyagi
