installing nuvotel 14.4 under win 3.1

my cousin was recently given a modem so her children could use the net, but i cannot seem to get it working. her computer is a 486/66 with 8mb ram and 250mb hd. installation of IE 3.03 (i think) appears to work correctly, but when i try to shut windows and restart as prompted, a dos screen briefly says "Bad command and filename" and returns me to windows. After this, dialling results in no response from the modem and a "cannot initialise modem" message. i do not have the original drivers and cannot locate them, so i am attempting to use the standard modem and/or standard 14.4 modem drivers included with IE. I have the recommended modem init. strings, but being unfamiliar with 3.1 have nowhere to put them. Am at wits end, help very much appreciated, thank you.

The "Bad command or file name" message that you see is probably a command from your autoexec.bat file that refers to a program that is no longer on your system. But it probably has nothing to do with you modem problems. To track down where the bad command or file name is coming from, hit the F8 key when you see "Starting MS-DOS...". Then do a step-by-step confirmation of each command in your config.sys and autoexec.bat files. When you figure out the offending command, use a text editor to get rid of it.

As for the modem, it should work as just a standard modem, but "should work" and "does work" are two completely different things. Does the software detect the modem? Have you tried using the Win3.1 terminal program to see if the modem will respond to commands and maybe even dial?
