Post word 2000 on w2k pro

perhaps someone can enlighten me.

i used word 2000 (same copy) on my old w98se pc for ages and had no problems.

my new w2k pc and word 2000 is giving me a headache.

when i start word 2000 (no other office app does this) i get the usual screen (icons, blank page etc) but i then get an extra totally blank screen window with an extra block on the task bar.

incidentally the "W" icon is in top left and the usual windows buttons on the right of the blank screen.

to use word i have to click either on the main screen or on the taskbar block.

if i then click on the extra block nothing happens except it redisplays the same word screen.

if i try to close it (right click, close) it does nothing and does not go away.
Mr Miyagi, by any other name... (is this sig short enough?)

Can you hit [PrtScn] and get a screen dump of what your problem looks like? Then post the pic and maybe someone will know what to do to fix your problem...

hope this comes out, ok.
this display is after double clicking the word icon and before clicking the screen to get to word.

OK, I'm stumped...

Have you tried right-clicking on the Word shortcut, selecting "Properties", then making sure it's set to run "maximized"? I really don't know what else to suggest...

You might want to post your Microsoft Word question at the VirtualDr Forum under General Software. I've had really good luck with Microsoft Office questions posted here...

What's the icon next to the max/restore/minimise buttons? Does anything appear on the down arrow selection?

Good luck

its as if the application hasn't quite loaded, when you click you then get the normal screen appear..(but two blocks on the taskbar)

what is so annoying is none of the other 2000 apps does this, and the same word install on 98 is ok.

Not much time to think at moment, but...

Go to ProgramFiles>Office (dah-de-dah) and find the .exe file for Word, see if it will launch properly from there. I'm thinking back to some problems we once had with a *.pip file which produced a similar problem with an incorrectly installed MSAccess. You could even search for any *.pip files. I'm pretty sure if the start-up code calls this file you'll get problems.

Anyway

Good luck!

Have you loaded windows 2000 service pack 2? Have you updated office 2000? There are 2 service packs that I know of. Finally try deleting Normal.dot, word will recreate it, but I have seen all kinds of flakey things happen with a corrupt template.

Try starting Word with the /a switch. If it loads normally, chances are like NooNoo said you have a corrupt template.

ah-ha!

with the /a switch, i get word "as i know it should be"...

without the /a i get the double screen effect.

then, after investigating the templates and add-ins, soooooo, i reckon its the "adobe pdf" add-in installed by adobe acrobat 5 causing this effect....

thanks everyone (& noonoo)
