Flabooble!
Sound gets messed up by Premier when editing MPEG files.
I have a Sony 707 and can take mpeg video with it. I pull the files over with no difficulty and they playback just fine.
When I pull the files into Adobe Premier the sound gets really funky with the volume on some sounds being lowered while others have the volume raised within the same clip. The worst thing it does is it doubles the sound up like an echo and it ruins the whole feel of the video. The initial playback is fine then Premier just shreds it.
I am using the default settings of the program to edit. I have updated my sound card (SB live value) to the latest drivers. I use Win 2000 as my OS. No other file type has this problem and editing mpegs downloaded from the web doesn't give me this problem. I am at a loss - anyone every seen this or have any suggestions?

Been fiddling with the settings on premiere for a few hours now and dropping the sound to mono helps a little but the echo is still there at random intervals.

Which version of Premiere are you using? I've been using 6.01, and it just seems like a big hassle. When I was using 5.x, I don't remember having any problems. It was so easy with that one, and other previous versions. Anyway, I feel your pain. I've been having problems with it myself.

Yup, 6.01 here. I have found that it is very flakey in general but the added functionality over 5 is too much to go back. I'm still looking for an answer. The thing I find to be the oddest is that it only does this with mpegs captured from my camera and not ones from the net.

if it's under 10M can you Email it to me to take a look at ?
Try to convert it from Mpg audio to WAV. Normaly you can do it using Winamp.

I'm sending it right now just so you can see what I mean. I just loaded up mgi video wave that was supplied with the camera and they sound alright with that application, though it sucks for editing.
Thanks bud.

1. Use TmpgEnc to separate the video and audio
File >> MPEG Tools >> Simple De-multiplex
Set your file in the input and the output directory. It|s working very fast.
This will create the video as m1v and audio as mp2.
2. Use Winamp to convert the audio into .WAV
Open the file MP2 file in winamp and check it.
Go to Options >> Preferences >> Plug-Ins >> Output
Change the output plugin from the Nullsoft waveout to Nullsoft Disk writer. Use the configure button to select the output directory.
Play the file again and it will convert it to WAV. don't forget to change it back to wavout after.
3. In Premier -
1. Load into the project the two files, the original MPG and the WAV created using Winamp.
2. Put the MPG file on the time line.
3. Separate the bad audio from the video -
on the time line window you have 8 small icons in the upper left corner.
the lower row, third button from the left. Click on it a long click and it will give you a option to change the tool.
There are 3 tools. Use the last one that look like the number "8" on the side.
Click on the video part of the mpg on the time line and then on the audio part.
They will change color from green to video in yellow and audio in blue. That mean that they are seperated.
Select the audio part and delete it.
Put the .WAV file created using Winamp on the time line below the Mpg video part and you solved the problem.

Yeah, converting the files seems to be the answer. Writing to Sony hasn't brought a response so I guess it's a 3rd program or more to do conversions to a usable format.
The MGI video thing that Sony supplied with the camera is beyond awful but I have found that Cleaner 5 is beyond wonderful (though kind of flakey). I was able to get 11 files transformed to .avi format and Premiere likes editing them a lot better.
Thanks for all the help again!

I thought this was interesting - got my response from tech support today.
It said (pretty much):
dear sir sorry about the time it took us to respond and you probably have worked out your issue by now but if you haven't please respond.
WTF is that?
Stellar support. Wow. Kind of errodes my confidance in Sony.

Now that is funny! An all purpose tech support reply email. As a Sony technician, you could just send that out for everything and anything. LOL. Just when you thought you've seen it all. :shaking head, disappointed with Sony:

Yeah totally. I know they are busy with all the people who are like - "how do i push a button?" and "What do you mean by camera?" as it is just after x-mas but that was a very interesting reply after waiting a week (or 2).
