    How to download VM

IN order to dload VM, you need to use windows update, set your preferences to show update catalog, then do a search for "java". you will find the right download for virtual machine.

Actually, if you are looking for specific updates, you can goto
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog
and get any specific ones you want.

It all has to do with the Sun vs. Microsoft lawsuit. Microsoft made a Windows only version of Java which broke the licensing agreement with Sun. Sun won the suit and Microsoft was stuck using an older version of the VM (one that was still cross-platform compatible). Microsoft decided to break the new agreement by not shipping the VM with XP and still offering their non-cross-platform VM through Windows Update. This again broke the new agreement. Now Sun is suing for real.
