    Question Web design (basic) questions...

I know this is a re-post, but that forum is going bye-bye::
    <hr>
I've been asked to create 2 web pages and update one more.

Now, the 2 are mainly going to be sales, no on-line ordering (yet).

I was just wondering if anyone had a suggestion for web hosting, including cost, setup fees, domain registration, etc..
I'm looking at about 25 Megs for one and maybe 10 for the other, but the need to expand will be there.

Also, they would like the sites to be searchable, and I know it involves registering with web engines and meta tags, I never worked with either of those, could someone please give me a few pointers?

    And one more question:

    What should I charge?
One will be roughly 15-25 pages, the other will probably be 6-12...
(All HTML, no flash, no JScript etc...)

    Thank you!

Depends on how complex the 15 to 25 page site is--example, if there is one page with just a couple of blurbs of text don't charge as much-- if it is 15 or 25 fully loaded pages with lots of content, tables, images, etc, I usually charge $40 or $50 a page-- hey, it works. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> but be willing to negotiate.

For the 6 to 12 page website, anywhere from $400 to $650 sounds good to me.

It definitely seems high priced but I have heard that many web designers charge far more.

Can't help ya with the search thing, sorry.

    Just my $0.02.

You can get a free program for inserting the Metatags into your page from here:

    <a href="http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/webpublish/fwmetatools.shtml" target="_blank">http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/webpublish/fwmetatools.shtml</a>

Then for instructions on how to get your site submitted to the search engines check here:

    <a href="http://www.supersoft-solutions.com/wtsubmit.html" target="_blank">http://www.supersoft-solutions.com/wtsubmit.html</a>

You can either submit to each search engine manually, or use a service (small fee) which will submit your site to multiple search engines at once.

Here's a good page if you plan on submitting your site to search engines manually, you can do them all at once here:

If you want to see real basic, wait until I put up these.. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Thanx for all the help, Jumgleman, I don't think I'll be able to get (nor would I feel right charging) as much as you suggested, but it is a good start.

For the larger site, it will be regular size pages (1.5 screens about) with picture and product information, I'll probably say $450-$500 for the entire site.

For the smaller one, we've worked with him a lot in the past, with training our dogs, and we even had a few free classes from him, so I'm thinking of going a lot lower than what I should for him, probably $125-$200.

    Mainly for these reasons:
    1) I have very little experience doing this professionaly.
    2) It would be very basic. I know HTML, thats it. I've looked into Perl/CGI and I might be able to do a little with that (but I'd need somehting to be able ot read the returned files...)
    3) No JScript. No Flash.

Do you think I'm fair for these prices?

Jungle - the hosting site (splashhost) seems pretty good, and not too expensice. $60 / a year for 100MB is a steal concidering what I thought it would cost before!

ILTU - thans for the registration sites, I checked them out and they look like we could easily use those!

Thank you for the help (although more info is always welcome!)!

I'm not trying to put you down, or insult you but...

If this is the first time that your makeing a pro web page.. don't ask for money...
Get your experiance up, do it for free (they'll speak to other people who'll want you to do more) and they wont be overly upset about what gets er.. churned out.

I'd heartily recommend not using Front Page, if your serious about it you will use either Note Pad ( if your hard core), or maybe dream weaver.

Don't be afraid of JavaScript.. its a wonderful thing..
Remember the Cardinal rule of K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid!).

Don't use music or lashy repeating gifs.
If you MUST use FLASH keep them SMALL and LITE and leave a "skip" button if its an intro.

hmmm maybe I should shutup.. this is turning into a vent..
    Good luck
"The fact that I think Bach was mistaken doesn't alter the fact that I think the B-minor Mass is one of the greatest pinnacles of human achievement. It still absolutely moves me to tears to hear it. I find the whole business of religion profoundly interesting. But it does mystify me that otherwise intelligent people take it seriously" - Douglas Adams
