CDRom Drive Won't Read Burnt CDs

I recently reloaded a system for a friend (Win98) and now there is a problem. Her 48x CDrom drive reads CDs like Money, Windows and game CDs just fine, but when you put a burned CD in it the hourglass pops up and freezes the computer. I've tried using different CDs burnt from different burners. These CDs can be read by similar systems with only regular CDRom drives. Any ideas?

Does the above statement also inlcude different brands of CDR and different dye colors. If not then I would go that route, because different dyes and different brands reflect the laser differently. some brands/dyes may not be readable in some CD ROMs.

If you've already been down that road, then I'd just replace the CDROM. 40X and above drives are only around $20 US. At that price it's not worth fighting with one that may be dying.

I have tried 2 different CD-R types. The funny thing is, it worked before the reload with the same hardware and the same CD. Go figure!

PS: Eevn though I put a new HD in her PC for only $25, she is mad at me because of this CD Rom problem!

have you check for MSDOS compatibility mode? if your running realtime drivers, (mscdex.exe and the *.sys file int the autoexec/config files) then your cdrom will not be able to read the "joliet" burning method to the CDROM. try wrting a CD in ISO mode (or Romeo i think) and see if you can read that. I would suspect that this is the issue

I have no idea what you're talking about M! I use Adaptec EasyCD Creater...that's about all I know about burning CDs!

go to the system properties, and go to the performance tab. Check to see if it's using MSdos Compatibility mode.

Now has for the cdwriter method. there are two ways to write one is the ISO9001 Method (there IS a setting for this) this method allows you to create CD's that can be read from the dos prompt. This methode is also required when making bootable CD's. This methode does NOT support long file names.

The Joliette methode is a "windows" only writing method. The advantage to this one is that it keeps the long file names.

Have you done all your Windows updates (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com or whatever means you normally use to patch Windows)? Windows 98 is very very old and buggy, and without a shipload of patches installed, alot of stuff prolly won't work correctly.

I plugged in two different CD Rom drives, a different 48x and an old 16x. Both of them worked great with the default driver. The odd thing is, her CD Rom worked before with that same CD...maybe she's lying to me!

check and see if there is a firmware update for cd drive and *** carefully!!! *** update it, if all else fails try a cleaning cd from your local radio shack

If you're running that cd rom as a slave to the hd, try putting the cd rom on a seperate cable by itself. If that don't do it, she needs a new cd drive.

Download latest ASPI drivers from Adaptec. I had a CD-R that wouldn't read burn disks until I installed them.

This is a very well known issue.
Some CD ROM's wont read burnt discs.. there is nothing you can do about it.

A lot of older stereo's can't read burnt cd's ether.
the same goes for car stereo's.

Right click on My computer, select properties, click on "performance" tab. click "file system" button, select CDROM tab, goto the drop menu and select "No-Read ahead", hit ok, apply if you see it, and restart. I used to have this problem with 95-98 comps and this usually fixes it.

If by chance it is a Creative CD Drive then you can contact them and ask for a replacement if it is still under warranty. I don't know if other manufacturers will do this or not. This was a problem with a lot of different manufacturers and none of the manufacturers could give me an answer as to why this would happen, including Creative.
